Aircon issue after non use.

Haven't used the aircon for a few weeks.

As hot day today turned it on and it blew icy cold but was offensively pongy (didn't even have three dog to blame).

Is it best to take to aircon specialist for cleaning or are those aircon bombs you can get just as good ?

First job check your pollen filter for crud and if necessary replace ,specially if its wet / covered with black mould.

My preference is to get the engine hot, set aircon the highest setting wind down windows, fans on full and let the heat destroy all the mold on the elements of the condenser.

Second option, if first not enough.

Buy a can of Dettol neutra air freshener anti bacterial (couple of quid from your supermarket, set air in car to blow from vents on recirculate, open them all stand at front of car and spray contents of Dettol can down into the plenum, via the grill and let the fans draw it through the vents.
Kills the bacterial as it goes.

Belay any thoughts of handing your hard earned over to someone who will do exactly this, and charge you stupidity money for the privilege.

I'd suggest you forget the vapour type pong bombs. These are basically air fresheners that mask odours, they don't actally clean anything away. The recommended type are bactericidal detergent formulations that make surface contact with the evaporator matrix (this is where the smells originate). The gloop washes and flushes away the becterial detritus from the matrix and dumps it out the evaporator drains under the car. These cleaners are typically foamed aerosols which are dispenced through a long tube. There are umpteen threads discussing aircon cleaners, the most recent being this very day.

Don't know anything about this one, but Rimmers are selling their stock off cheap (though delivery is a bit steep): https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-S3SGAC

I've seen the suggested types on ebay as well

I think you mean the evaporator Ron, but even so I am surprised that this method worked because hot air from the heater matrix is never directed over the evaporator, no matter what you do with the controls.
