Backplate replacement
 

I'm thinking about replacing both rear backplates - the holes that the sprung pins anchors into have rotted and could do with replacing. I've found a complete pair of backplates from dmgr's which are complete with new shoes, springs, pins, adjuster etc.

Am I right in thinking that once the disc & hub is off, the backplate is only held on by 4bolts? Once these have been removed, will the backplate just pull away and then I can simply replace the rotten one for a new complete one?

Has anyone else tried doing a straight swap without taking all the bits off the plate first?

But I wish my handbrake cable had come out that easily ! Mine was like world war 3 :eek: Got to be the worst part of the job .

Yes very good video, but agree with previous poster the cable just didn't want to move on the ones I've done, mind you I never tried his method of whacking it inwards. Noted too that the four bolts holding the backplate didn't give him much of a fight either, mine came out ok but certainly not that easily. Not sure why he used a blow torch, once the four bolts were out the backplate generally falls away, even in the video the backplate is seen wobbling before using the blowtorch didn't seem to be stuck on the shaft.

Agree with you guys, I’ve never had a cable that had come out easily it’s always a case of slitting the ferrule with an angle grinder to release it.

Put loads of copaslip on the cable before fitting it into your new backplate.

Watching some of the videos it seems like some of the bolts are maybe pre-cracked before the shot. Everything goes very easily and smoothly :D

Mmmm, Bit like "Wheeler Dealers" Edd never seems to have a problem with seized bolts.

I guess it makes for better viewing...and fills us with false confidence! I do appreciate video guides though and the time that goes into making them.

I had to chop the brake cable off and put a new pair on.
Mo's handbrake has never worked so well :D

Decent clear video, but you can bet your bottom dollar that every single bolt or nut was previously loosened before the video was started, also 9 times out of 10 you have to back of the knurled nut so the discs comes off, but good guide i doubt any member doing the job will find it a smooth as the video makes out.
