ECU Replaced. Car drove for a day then stopped

Hi all,
it's been few years since I last was here, but I need some help and advice please.

My parents live in Ireland and have a 2004 Rover 75 diesel auto. Their ecu got flooded and a chap said he would fix it by replacing it with any ecu and reprogramming it.

The car ran for a day and then died on their way to town and now wont start again.

They are now having immense difficulty getting hold of the original chap who replaced their ecu.

I am wondering, if I bought another replacement ecu, would someone here be able to program it to my parents car if I provided the vin number etc. I can then bring this back to them and fit it myself and hopefully get them going.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello Niall,

I'd say your best bet is to contact one of the club traders with a T4 who may be able to offer a postal repair service. Here are three of those:
  • BigRuss
  • cb750Chris
  • Trikey

Niall,

Assuming it is the ECM and not something else like underbonnet pump failing. When the ECM was replaced were you able to establish real time data, fuel pressure etc?

That’s the problem if using a secondhand 75/ZT ECM, it’s not guaranteed that they too would have had a drink in the past. Far better to obtain a used ECM from a Freelander 1 (if same part number, & virginise it) which is always dry.

If you are stuck with any of the above traders via post, I could help out with usually Freelander ECM which will be coded to match your parents car exactly.

Please confirm the part number of the ECM? The part number will end in 692, 720 or 340. I have 1 brand new 692 left, the others are used but all from a Freelander 1, so never wet.

I hope the service you're offering is for free? Not allowed to offer a paid for service without paying traders fees. I've been told off enough times. Also having T4 Diagnostics under your profile username is a bit of a cheeky way to advertise.

That sounds a lot like sour grapes "if I'm not allowed to do that, then why is he"

To be fair up to a point I agree, however it would appear Lovel is offering to help no mention of payment, I'm sure you could offer to do whatever for free also without the fanfare.

From what I've read in these forums, it appears those who have the knowledge and wherewithal to perform electrickery and help others are often critisised, I only wish I had half that sort of knowledge.

What is important here is people that are in need are helped, not points scoring.........if it's any consolation I suspect given his location Lovel won't get much passing "trade"

As long as he if offering for free (obviously excluding parts costs) I don’t have any issues. I can do lots with these cars, including repairing, Virginising and programming the diesel ecus. But as soon as I offer to help, even if I don’t mention any sort of payment then I always receive a PM saying someone has complained about me...

Like you say people who can help are often criticised, I am one of those that can help and has the knowledge to help. But just because I don’t pay fees it meant I can get told off for offering even if I don’t ask for anything other than parts costs.

I was told that someone complained about me saying I had a VT4 in my signature and that it was removed. That’s the reason I’m annoyed about his profile saying T4 Diagnostics. If it’s one rule for one and one rule for others it’s not fair. Am I allowed to put T4 Diagnostics and Key Programming in my profile?

Probably not I'd say.........I'm reasonably handy with the spanners, but the weird and wonderful world of modern car electronics is quite frankly baffling........my idea of engine management extends to points and condensers and spark plugs, beyond that is simply a mystery.

I wouldn't let yourself get too wound up about it, as long as you are able to help others it doesn't really matter.

It doesn't appear on the face of things to be an extortionate outlay to prevent any backbiting.
