Onbuy - Future British Alternative to Amazon?
I had never heard of them.
Needed to buy a new Russel Hobbs kettle (life in the fast lane :D) The boss found this lot :smilie_re:https://www.onbuy.com/gb/ Amazon price £39.99, from here £30.99. It could be worth a look if you want to buy something more interesting. Anyone fancy a cuppa? |

Milk no sugar :D I'll have a gander through there later, I need to upgrade my mobile phone as the banking app says mines not compatible with that NFC malarkey  |
Prices seem good, I suppose it depends on how quick the free delivery is. As much as I hate Amazon the guaranteed next day delivery if needed can be useful.
I will have a browse tonight and give it a test as I need a few bits. |
seem to be quite lot of 2nd hand car parts on there?, breakers ?
so maybe more a bit like ebay, and not really cheapo ? ;) but will have another look later :D |
There are and have been lots of similar portals where they make their money charging businesses for space on their sites. Of course Amazon springs to mind, though they are also a retailer in their own right. I've always thought that there must be a conflict of interests at Amazon where the portal is competing with other merchants who advertise on their site and sell the same product. IIRC from when I worked in the card payment business, at least one of the big card schemes had a programme to provide an online portal for retailers to use. As that was 25 years ago, it presumably came to nothing.

I'll use Amazon when:
1 They pay proper taxes 2 They pay their staff a decent wage 3 Johnson slaps on a punitive Windfall Tax as they did on the oil companies a few years ago. PS I wrote a book on Marketing 20 odd years ago and on the day of launch they discounted by 50+% rendering my commission derisory and almost every bookseller unwilling to stock it. Dave |
Yeah, it's going on for 15 years since I bought anything from Amazon, for the reasons you cite.
It's odd - back in the 90s and early 2000s, in spite of not being a tech head I was an early adopter of so much new tech and new services that were appearing in terms of using email and web from the early 90s, having a PC of my own for professional purposes as far back as 1995, using machine translation even before the advent of Google Translate - or Google, for that matter - then embracing the likes of Amazon, Google, FB etc when they first appeared. Nowadays, I don't use Amazon, FB or any other social media such as Twitter/Instagram etc. I don't even use Google! (make DuckDuckGo your search engine of choice ...) For years, I've been using add-ons and other software which prevent any tracking by FB/Google of my internet use. Otherwise it gets really awkward to sell all my drugs, weapons and porn dontchaknow. |
I have ordered a Sky Q remote for £4.40 with free delivery as much for an experiment and it will be useful as the wife often misplaces it.
I could get one from Argos for £35 and Amazon for £4.39 but they want £3.99 for delivery. I will report back once it arrives. |
Site says it GBs favorite site but .com address shows its not UK so taxes etc will probably still not be paid here.
