Thermostat maybe.

As some know been having a coolant loss for some time now.
But there was never any sign of coolant loss in the engine or drips on the floor.
Well have found it.
Its coming out of the coolant filler cap.
Have now put a new one on.but still the same.
But we have noticed the coolant rises only when the engine fan kicks in at 100c as soon as the temp starts to drop the coolant starts to drop.
Could this be the thomstat sticking or faulty.

Thanks

But what is the normal operating temperature of the car? Mine is constant around 95 deg using either the car's obd or my Torque Pro. The fan should kick in anywhere between 96 and 100, yours sounds a little late.

Sorry Mike, that is incorrect. Steve's fan is working normally. It starts running at 100 degrees and stops at 96.

Steve, did you make this observation with the expansion tank cap removed as the engine warmed up?

yep temp on the v6 is right .
fan on at 100 and off at 96 .
when running right its a nice 93.
just dont get when it hits the 100c and the fan cuts in the coolent over flows the as the temp drops so does the water to its right level.

OK Simon, have heard various sources, I think the one I quoted from was written by Jules, same numbers from Keith (Ellesmere), confusing isn't it?

I believe this is from the MGR Workshop Manual
EDIT: The yellow comment is mine. I'm unclear why 'Valid = No' is in column 7 header.

Coolant Tank Level

How much coolant do you have in the header tank, is it only to the maximum mark, can you see the step in side the tank with a torch as here below, anymore than that and you stand a chance of there being no expansion therefore you will lose coolant through the cap, also make sure the cap is fully turned down, so much as you can no longer turn it.

Just to add - make sure you're running the correct anti-freeze blend all year round - one of the properties of this magic stuff is that it raises the boiling point of the coolant quite significantly. :)

yes coolant is at the right level I can still see the fill mark at the bottom.
yes to the mix its ready mix oat pink mind you it is from Halfords.
started it up with the new cap on. car not been started for a week so it was nice and cold.
all was well till the fan came on at 100c confirmed by the led temp gauge and the obd. as soon as the temp started to drop the coolant would stop overflowing. let the temp run down to 96c then left it to rise again and as soon as we hit the 100c and the fan started up it came out from around the new cap.
so after the temp had dropped again I took the cap off. and again as soon as the fan kicked in the coolant over flowed again. not as much but it still did it.

thanks
