Electric price increase
 

Our electric has gone up from 16p to 21p a unit :eek:.
News was saying industry is not protected from price rises.

Fuel prices up but what of wages, pensions (private and government) and benefits?

We have solar power and a few weeks ago traced why our electric bills were silly money but any saving we are now making will be slashed by the price increase.

Last time I looked at solar panels they had a break even point of about 9 years. Now that the price of electricity is rocketing up, I wonder how long that would reduce the break even point by ?

Zero - because the panel suppliers will no doubt be increasing their prices! ;)

Things look pretty bleak for ordinary folk who don't have a few million pounds in the the bank.

I feel particularly sorry for those on low incomes who must be very fearful of how the next few months will be

The feed in tariff, the price people get for selling their electric to the major companies needs to be increased, solar panel prices need to come down as do wind turbines.
Looked last night at the cost of a turbine, over £20,000 for a stand alone type.
I think I read a web page that typical/average house uses something like 3,700'ish kwh per year of electric and 8-17,000 of gas. At 21p I think the electric is just under £800 so to break even will take years.

Simondi, your words could have come out of my mouth. Low income families are to be hit by a tsunami. It will be a test of our society as to how we support them.

Ah the costs for new green revolution. :duh:

The slightest whiff of a price increase or scarcity and the world will go mad. We cannot just turn off oil and gas overnight unless you want anarchy.

Have you heard HMG’s latest proposals to apply an additional green levy for gas, about to be rushed through to coincide with the COP26 love fest of the great green deluded.

HMG has pushed the oil and gas industry to the brink, leaving companies to abandon gas storage wells, and trying to shut the industry down in favour of windmills and solar. Isn’t it ironic that neither of these green products would not exist without it, even serious amounts of coal is required for manufacture solar panels. How green is that?

This COP 26 is going to be a real eye opener as to what they intend to implement regarding fossil fuels, Diesel has traditionally been taxed by volume but they're now going to tax it by emissions same with road transport, aviation & shipping. The ETS (Emission trading system) is already at a record high of €61/tonne, UK's ETS is even higher at £74/tonne, I read a piece the other week that said at €60/tonne it would put 50p on a litre of diesel :eek:.

In the rush to keep the oil in the ground, remember that tyres are made from synthetic rubber , natural rubber being far from an adequate material.

Without oil, what kind of tyres are your EV going to use?:eek:

Oil is a chemical feedstock and will be needed for a very long time.

Cutting one’s own throat comes to mind, but still we will look good at the conflab in wee Jeanie McKays back yard.

Coincidentally As i write this we have been on a power cut for the past hour, wife struggling without her cuppa. Looks like its time to wynd up the emergency genny. Chimney sweep has just appeared with his new electric van, very proud of it, but he has range anxiety he tells me. After a journey from Aberdeen to Peterhead (62 miles) and back the van needs a charge, tells me he has a dilemma on his hands.

HMG could at a stroke reduce costs to people by removing VAT on heating and electric, not to mention the tax take on vehicle fuel of 75% or more. Every time the price of oil or gas goes up HMG make even more of a killing, perhaps rather than a price cap on energy companies HMG should consider it themselves. How naive to put a price cap anyway, but then it was touted by both sides years ago and now look at the mess the industryis in as we are not self sufficient anymore in energy.
