I now, for one am doing 50 miles a month in my car!

As petrol is rapidly heading towards £6.50 a gallon, it's hardly surprising now, is it!

Based on the last recession fuel in 1986 was around £1.80 per gallon average with inflation at roughly 3.5% annually then petrol should be costing £4.32 per gallon today. Is it any wonder people think twice before going for a drive.

Not sure what the duty, on unleaded, was in 1986, but in 1989 it was £0.1772 per litre.
It is now £0.6097!!! I like the way they then apply the VAT on the duty :mad:

With this slump in sales it is a massive amount of revenue lost for the government though ;)

P.S. I have just worked out tax and duty on a tank full for our cars is £47.56 per tank.

Not that anyone would see a reasoned argument as its easy to bash the Government, but for what its worth, we actually pay less in Fuel Duty now as a % that we did in the year 2000

It was 78% duty in January 2000 and in September 2012 we were paying 58%

Fuel increases are not down to Government % tax increases, they are down to retailers/oil companies.

Yes the Government could ease things by reducing duty, but I very much suspect the oil companies and retailer would simply increase cost to compensate, so me personally, I would sooner have money going back to the government, than some oligarch in Russia.
