Driving Licence - automatic only
A friend has a driving licence entitling her to only drive automatics, whereas, a manual licence entitles the holder to drive either automatic or manual.
With these "tiptronic" type gear boxes, surely that amounts to a manual box? Any thoughts, or has there been guidance on it? |
Good question I've often wondered about that. it's kind of a grey area.
My missus has a auto only licence, I've had automatics since the early 70's I've no intention of buying a manual car ever again:D |
An automatic is defined as any vehicle which has only two pedals - i.e. no clutch pedal, so tiptronics, dsgs etc are fine.

My 75 is an automatic and it has limited manual change down options too i think she be fine as long as no pesky clutch pedal in the well lol:}:} |
If the car has only 2 pedals it can be driven on an automatic licence tiptronic or not.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions.

A lot of newer automatics aren't even automatics anymore but manual gearboxes with automatic operation

One of the weirdest was a Mercedes A-class I drove once, with what was called ACS, where it had a manual gearbox, but auto clutch, looked like a manual gearknob with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, as well as reverse, but only had the two pedals. Never caught on, but was a novelty!

The infamous DSG (Dual Shaft Gearbox) gearboxes are classed as auto's but are a manual gearbox with 2 electronic clutches, pre-selection and electronic shift, all the advantages of an auto, with no power losses like a manual and a faster gearchange than a human can change gear(no more slush boxes).
