Tailgate won’t open

Rover 75 tourer Connoisseur SE diesel auto MK2 - as of today, for some reason the tailgate won’t open at all. Tailgate glass opens fine but not the tailgate. We used it yesterday without any issues.
Any idea what the problem is? Thanks.

So, tailgate still doesn’t open from the handle at the back but opens fine when long pressing the unlock button on the key fob…
Any idea why it won’t open from the handle?

My guess would be the switch isn't working... you could check using a multimeter for continuity (or lack of it). Never had to do this on my tourer but the wifes micra had its tailgate switch renewed for its recent MOT.

good luck

This has happened to mine, I think the microswitch has failed. One day I'll get round to having a proper look... 2+ years and counting... although it worked a couple of times recently then stopped again.

Could be a polluted microswitch, try some good contactcleaner suitable for electric components. Check if there is a difference in temperatures if it works when warm/cold outside? Spray some contact cleaner in all the components of the handle/locking system. Worked for me.

Have you had a look at the square external rubber part of the switch ?

As they get older they can cause problems, I had a similar problem on one of my old Mk1's.

I pulled the rubber out of the hole, it's easy, it's like a square grommet, to check the action of the microswitch, pushed my finger on the microswitch, it worked OK.

The rubber, from memory, was distorted and aged preventing full depression of the microswitch, I used it without the rubber for a month or so till I found a good one off a scrapper.

I think some one did a bit of a write up on it quite a while ago.
