Rear Brake Stuck On
 

I was hoping to pick up Thomasconnie 75's car this evening, but Tonycuk1974 has just phoned me to say that the brakes are stuck on on one of the rear wheels (car has not moved since January). I'm going to try and go down tomorrow and see what I can do. Any tips please? I'm assuming that rear brakes will be discs on a 2.5V6??

Try and drive it off.........it should go with a bang...

That's what I thought too, but Tony says he's tried, but to no avail. :mad:

Alas you won't have much choice other then backwards and forwards rocking to break it

I had this problem on a Seat Inca Van.....ended up driving about 100 feet untill it poppped off, flat spotted the tyre doing it :mad:

Stick a space-saver wheel on if you have one saves the tyre etc.

Try getting someone to sit in the back seat on the stuck side which may just stop the wheel from skidding. Worth a try.

if it was the pads rusted to the discs it should free itself when you try and move off..

could be the brake cylinders seized.

OK - I'm assuming that it's the handbrake pads are to blame. Car is Auto, so not as easy as manual to get some real forwards backwards momentum. Tony is not too keen on the idea of me driving the car, dragging the wheel down his road for a hundred yards or so and actually neither is this Tony!

So plan is to go down tomorrow armed with copper/hide hammer and give the hub a wallop. Fingers crossed.

This will sound rough, but worked for me, despite back and forward movement towing with a Defender 110, I couldn't get her free, she just dragged her rear wheels along the road fully locked.

Take a heavy hammer and preferably a large brass or steel dolly with you that will fit through the wheel aperture and hit the rear caliper and/or disc smartly. The shock freed the discs off for me.

If you ever see a scrappy picking up and old car with sized brakes, this is one the the things that he does, only much more severely.

A little good news BUT also some bad news:
I went down to Illminster this afternoon with my trusty copper/hide hammer, removed O/S rear wheel, gave the hub a couple of clouts and hey presto the wheel was free. :D

Jump started car and moved a few yards, but nasty graunching noise from nearside front - on examination the spring has broken. :mad::mad: Tony mentioned that he heard the noise, when he tried to free off the brakes under power - perhaps spring was already weakened and this was just too much? Lucky, I guess, that it didn't happen on the move for either of us.

Not sure what to do next, as clearly car cannot be driven as is. Options: get car collected and taken to my local garage, but this will cost or perhaps change the strut on site?? The latter is beyond my limited mechanical competence, but I could provide assistance if anyone is local, willing and able.

Tony is happy to give us a reasonable time frame to resolve things.
