Manifold changing

Both myself and my friend would like to thank Steve (Artic) for changing both our inlet manifolds this morning. Job well done. My friends map sensor was blocked solid and built up, mine had a small hole still showing, but was almost blocked. The egr on both were contaminated, but not to any degree like some have been. The manifolds were not like Steve had seen in some cases, almost ful of gooey carbon. All in all, we were both quite pleased that the main contamination in the manifold was not apparent. Thanks again Steve. See you at the Nano Meet 21st March.

Hi Dave. Never thought to take any pictures but to me, after seeing some of the glued up manifolds I have seen on here, mine was not to bad. Steve shone a torch into it and said it was not to bad for 108,000 miles.Johns was around the same for around 80,000 miles. The problem is that John, and really myself, mostly only do short journeys. 1 or 2 miles from home to the allotment, both of us only do short hops. The only time that they get their legs stretched really is if we go on holidays together. John drives over here, and I do the driving when we go continent hopping. John covers around 500-600 miles then. I cover around 1200-2000 miles when we go to France in the Loire or further .The map sensors were as I described them in the first post. When we go away, we each usually average around 50/52 mpg, that’s four up and a full boot, and I mean a full boot. Even when just Barb and I go on our own to Germany, we still get the same mpg with only half a boot full. Cruise around 80 occasionally going up to 90. Actually quite pleased the state of mine. MOT in March, and last year had a problem with emissions, so hoping to go straight through this year. Fingers crossed.

Manifolds will now be scrapped out and have a soaking in oven cleaner, the EGR have joined the others dosed in engine cleaner, they will be brushed out with Swarfega tomorrow wiped out then finished off with carb cleaner.

Cheers Steve. I remember you saying my egr looked at if the fuel was running quite lean. It was dry inside what we could see. Just to let you know, the engine seems to be running a little bit more lively now. Not that there was anything amiss with it before. I must admit that I was surprised how clean both were after seeing some of them in posts on here. Thanks again Steve for providing a great service.

Thanks Steve. To be honest I thought my manifold would be a bit blocked worse than it was. Both John and I use Redex, but I don’t think that has had any effect on the build-up of grunge in the manifold. I do tend on occasions, to give mine the Italian tune-up medicine, which John did not believe in until last year when he tried it out, and when it was taken for its medical, he was surprised how low the emissions were.

Steve, do you use new gaskets/ seals or do you re use the old ones?
