How to check if a Car is Cat C - For Free!

I have discovered a way to check if a car is Cat. C or D, without paying a fee or giving any personal information, such as email address etc.

Trying it on a few cars, it seems to be accurate. ;)

First go to http://www.autotrader.co.uk/sell-my-car
then key in the registration number of the car you want to check and the mileage.
Continuing should display the car details.
Then press "Next Step"
You will then see the following page

As you can see, on this example, the car is recorded as Cat. C under the car details.
Should the car be clear, then there will be nothing shown.

This obviously does not replace a full check, but might be of help for someone wanting to run a quick check. :}

Yeah or you could use TotalCarCheck and you will get the mileage from the MOT history as well for free

Just did this, and Autotrader very helpfully suggested that I set a sale price of £560  . In order to make me feel better, they also kindly informed me that this price was £450 more than I would get in a part exchange deal :mad: . So that's all good then.

Thanks Mickyboy but I have just had a look at that site and it doesn't show up the Cat C on a car that is. ;)
It looks like that they want £1.89 to run a "Silver Check" which gives a written off check and £8.99 for a "Gold Check" which is a more comprehensive one.

They think I should sell mine for £1670 which is £980 more than I'd get for it, part ex
Oh well, it's worth ten times that amount to me ;)

No Cat C though!

You can do the same with the Motors.co.uk website.

Not that I'd sell her as I've put a million man hours into keeping her on the road:duh:

Well, not showing anything bad for mine, and it suggested a sale price of what I just paid for it - quite happy with that really!

steve-45 28th June 2016 18:23

Just checked mine and no write off flag - but the recommended sale price for a 40,000 mile 2 owner diesel auto conni saloon is just silly !!!

A friend of mine is looking for one and everything he has looked at so far is 2 or 3 times what autotrader recommends I sell mine for .....

Dawn 28th June 2016 18:40

 I wonder if that means I got mine a bit cheap?
