Diesel auto non start - EP on dash

Folks, tried to start the marmite duotone last week, but it was just turning over (quite well) and not firing up...no movement on the Rev needle.
Then I noticed EP on the dash, and there was no illumination on the gear selector.
The battery symbol remains on when key is in position 2.

I checked the plenum, and all looked fine. No tide marks on the pollen filter as far as I could see, and I had a clear view of the ground through the drain hole.

I removed the battery and charged, but still the same today.

Any pointers on what to check before I remove the ecu?

I cannot help you with an answer, but as I could experience something similar at some point, I have had a quick look in the search, as I have seen this mentioned before. Until someone with more experience comes along THIS page has some potential info, especially from Brian in post 12.

Hello Sean,

As your engine is affected I'd say that 'EP' in this case denotes a CAN bus fault rather than something mechanical or electrical within the automatic gearbox (based upon information in RAVE).

By "the ecu", do you mean the ECM (Engine Control Module) or the automatic transmission ECU?

Simon

Yes Simon, I mean ECM. (I was thinking it was called Engine Control Unit).
Prior to this, I would have had issues when the FBH was connected, in that the dash wouldn’t display indicators operating, when they were, so I just disconnected it.
I believe this was canbus related.

That's a good move. :}

The absence of direction indicator tell-tales in the instrument pack is a fault with the K-bus. They don't need the high data speed which is a characteristic of the CAN bus.

It is a CANBUS fault Sean, and the ECM has been wet, there is no oil pressure warning lamp illuminated ;)

Send me the ECM and I'll repair it.

Classic symptoms of a faulty ECM so get it tested by someone who knows what they are doing. The CAN bus controller is built into the ECM, and if it fails the auto box goes into EP mode because it can't communicate with the ECM.
Check the LP fuel pumps - they won't be working with this fault.

Just sent Sean a PM about this, you're right Mike, it's the ECM.......that will teach him to buy a dodgy old banger.
