Alpine cd changer stopped working

I have had the car 17 years and it has always had the Alpine XQE105560 cd changer in it . This has just stopped working .
I have had problems twice before when it has jammed , but dismantling and a bit of lubrication solved that both times . This time it is not jammed ; case ejects fine and running it with the lid off shows the 6 discs being moved across in turn no problem . However , once a disc has moved into play position and is spinning , the Symphony radio display shows track 0 and stays at that until it eventually decides to move up to the next disc . Using the radio buttons to select the next track has no effect .
i have 2 cartridges and get the same problem with both . I have removed , inspected and wiped the discs but no effect .
Is the laser knackered , do you think ?
If I have to replace , I wouldn't mind having my glovebox back and might consider an alternative original radio / single cd model but I would miss the cassette player ! :o

Gosh! I really dislike it when posts/questions that don't get any reply. So I did a little search for you on ebay.co.uk and found a number of Alpine changers that could solve your problem. One is a mere 10GBP (EDIT: Although you would have to be soldering your existing cable to the cut off cable of that particular unit :() :)

Worth a try ;)

Thanks for that , Jan .
I have done a bit more work on my player and thought I had fixed it after dusting the laser heads , but after a few minutes it stopped working again and now seems dead !
I have seen the £10 one :} I wonder why he has cut the cable ? Doesn't sound promising but as you say for £10 there's not a lot to lose :shrug:
Other thing I am considering is switching to a later model of 75 radio which has a single CD player .
Oh dear , life is never easy ......

Hi Chris,

I "think" the 10 GBP changer has been salvaged from a wreck. It might be possible to open the unit and connect your "old" cable. It usually connects with plugs in those units.

But why not go "all the way" and bring the interior of the car in to the roaring 20's by installing a double din unit? I have had Xtrons and now an Erisin which performs pretty good. I admit you will have to forgo on the cassettes but on the other hand... on a 32 GB micro SD card you can store at least 200 cassettes worth of music :D

To wet the appetite a sneak peak of my unit in the 75:

Just to finish off , I bought the cheap one with the cut cable . Swapped the cable with the one off mine ; it did just plug in to the circuit board .
All is now well and working fine . That was a cheap fix :}:}:}

Excellent! Glad you got it fixed. Many happy miles with the CD's accompanying you :)

Apolgies for hijacking this thread, but I also have the CD autochanger in the glove box which has been there for the last 21 years. It may be the same Alpine model:shrug: but I used it once to try it and it worked fine. I don't use any CDs or tapes or even the radio so it's never bothered me until today when trying to start the car (CDT) absolutely nothing. All was blank, no light flickering or anything, I had to use the key to open the door too.

Tried turning key a few times, still nothing, then I heard a noise from the glovebox. The changer was making a noise. I slid the 'door' open and pressed the blue button and the disc tray opened, slid back in and then it whirred 6 times checking for a disc. I then tried the ignition again. Success all lights on and engine started.

Why after so many years would it start to play up like that? Is there a simple way like a fuse or wire to disconnect to prevent it happening again?
Thanks, Ray.

The fuse (F22 for a MK1) is used for the radio and the CD player so you can't remove that.

What you could do is remove the CD player from the glove compartment and remove the casing. Unplug the cable from the board (actually the opposite from what Chris had to do :)) It will be a bit fiddly but it can be done.

You could also try to disconnect the cable from the back of the radio. Unfortunately the CD player will still be powered then (but maybe it prevents it from causing problems).

Or maybe replace the CD player with another?

Plenty options to choose from :D

Hello Ray,

It sounds to me as if the fault lies elsewhere if your remote central unlocking didn't operate and you had no warning lights in the instrument pack.

I would start by checking your battery's voltage.

Simon

I also feel that that you have a battery / connection problem not related to the CD player .
The CD changer will make noises as it "wakes-up" after the power has been disconnected / interrupted for any reason . This is normal :}
if you really want to disconnect the CD then you can remove it by undoing the 4 nuts underneath the glove box floor , then disconnect the plugs / cable at the back of the CD . If you don't ever use it then perhaps leave it out and reclaim your glovebox for storage ?:shrug:
