painted front bumper sill, lacquer question??

now the front bumper is painted and looking better than my first attempt, the way i painted it was undercoat, flaten off, re under coat, flaten off again, the spray the sill to just above the top lip as it were, will use rubbing compound to blend in to the paintwork, now when i lacquer it, do i go beyound the painted area and the use rubbing compount to blend the lacquer in from there.

Hiya.Double bend the masking tape around the area to be sprayed.... That way you will not leave a "ridge" of lacquer. Make sure you let it "cure" before using anything to blend in. In the past i have used Auto Gleam Paint Renovator.... Not as abrasive..... Poppy

Apologies for butting in on the thread, but a related question - from a paintwork numpty....

The top lip of my rear bumber, where it clips into the body, the quarter inch strip - has had the laquer partially peel off on one side. I think even I could manage to touch it in with a small brush, but what do buy and how should I then prepare it? Its the black silver sparkle colour (name?)

Last time I did anything like this, there was no such thing as laquer.

Hiya . Rub down with 3000 grade wet and dry..... you can blend the edge of the lacquer into the existing paintwork.... if the paint is okay underneath, i would again use double folded masking tape and just spray the area needed with a small overlap....Again, i would personally use the Auto Gleam Paint renovator to blend in. No doubt someone will attempt to shoot me down in flames with my suggestions...:D. But i am very artistic and have done this many times with 100% success. Poppy

Hiya poppy, thanks for the reply, when you say double blend the tape, what does that mean, and if there is a reidge would it be able to be blended in ok..

Hiya. Instead of sticking the masking tape to the surface flat, jist stick half of it down and then loosely bend the other half over. This prevents a definite "paint line" that you would get if stuck flat. Yes, you can still blend in a ridge, but better if you can prevent it in the first place....Does that make any sense... LOL. Poppy

so roll the edge nearest to the painted surface under which in theory form a sloped surface on the new paint

Hiya. Yes, that is it. If you just bend the tape over so that the sticky side is on the top and the bottom...You can then mask of more of the area when you secure the flappy top bit down with more tape. I always use this method as the paint can then gently "bleed"under the fold without causing a definite build up and a line as you would get if it were just stuck down in a strip..Just have a little practice on something before you spray and you then see what i mean.
