Noisy 3rd to 2nd manual gearbox

Replaced my daughter’s clutch slave, now got a good feel to the pedal, all gears engage without noise going up, but the change down from 3rd to 2nd snatches / is noisy unless almost at a stop, and just that change - all others are fine. Have bleed clutch 3 times now and getting nowhere. Ideas please ?

Sounds like a worn synchromesh on 2nd gear, if the other gears change OK without too much force. Can happen if the clutch has been bad for a while.

I was fearing something like that which would almost be terminal for the car as it requires new belts and welding.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply.

You will have to teach her how to double de-clutch! Third to neutral, clutch out and rev, clutch in and it should go in to second sweetly if the revs were correct. It's how we drove before synchromesh gearboxes!;) The old gearboxes were called "crash" gearboxes for good reason!:D

Not easy teaching young ones new tricks, especially when you need their help to get your iPhone working :}

But was thinking of the sync ring, why doesn't it "sing" on the way up, just down?

Regards

Syncromesh has a lot easier job on the way up the box. when going up through the box you can easily change gear going up the box with no clutch once you get a feel for the box.

Going down through the box is a different matter. the speed ratios are very different, again you can change down without a clutch but you need to blip the throttle to increase engine revs and then feel the box.

I would have to concur a worn sync is probable, where is the biting point Mike?

Thanks for the reply Dave. The biting point is about 3/4 of the way up and doesn't slip or anything, everything is OK except for the change down from 3rd to 2nd.
We'll see what she wants to do but she won't want it as it is meaning there will be more work down the line for you know who or she'll sell it for spares.

Keep well

Mike

When I had to teach folks to drive a "crash" gearbox, the key saying was revs up to change down and revs down to change up. It is a matter of synchronising the gears into mesh. If you think of the engine speed just before you change up the gearbox, that is the engine revs you need to align the meshing gears (as you rev in neutral with the clutch out) to change back down the box. Sounds complicated but it becomes second nature once you get into the habit.

Thanks for the video, now all I've got to do is persuade my daughter to adopt the technique - I'll stick with my automatic :}

Learnt to double declutch early on, but struggled to get used to driving coaches with twin speed rear axles 'cos I never did it that often. :getmecoat:
