Re-Map. Insurance Implications.

I was discussing today the subject of re-maps. I raised the matter of insurance implications, and was told that, should it come it it, my insurance companies would never know, as they don't have/never use the necessary equipment to detect such modifications.

I have no plans to have my car remapped, but am curious as to whether insurance companies actually pay attention to such matters.

Of course, an insurer could be aware of posts such as these.

True, but the chances of me having it done are zero. I hardly come into the boy racer class, and was just asking out of curiosity, on the basis that some insurance companies go to great lengths to reject claims, often on spurious grounds.

you dont need to be a boy racer to have a car remapped.
It can turn a dog of a car into a reasonable car, it can turn a poor tow car into a reasonable tow car.

The witness said the Rover 75 flew away from the lights. The insurance assessor thinks, "a Rover 75 flying away from the lights, surly not, let me check the ECU"

Why would you not inform your insurance company you have had your car remapped?

As I have made it clear that I have no intention of having my car re-mapped, and was only asking out of curiosity, I'll leave it at that. Matter closed.

Is it worth taking the gamble of avoiding a (possible) small increase in the premium and have the worry that any claim could be declined or reclaimed if the insurance found out.

Not worth the risk to conceal and if your insurance was invalidated by non disclosure that could be a whole world of pain- i remapped to 200bhp and notified my insurance company also my metal manifold - an increase but over a year peanuts:shrug:

Back in 2013 I enquired about a remap for my 75, my insurers LV quoted £20, I then found some months later on renewal that my new policy included an upgrade to 160hp, even though I had not confirmed that I had re mapped the car. As a result I got the re map done and felt happy with the modest increase in my premium and even happier with the increase in hp.

Both of mine are re-mapped and declared to the insurance company. The V8 has a supercharger fitted and that is also declared. In fact all modifications on both cars have been declared. The difference in price between the pair is just £20, the V8 being the dearest.
