Splines on steering column

Other than taking off my steering wheel and counting, does anyone know how many splines there are on the steering column / steering wheel please?

I am toying with the idea of replacing my steering wheel with one from a Rover P5 or P6.

Thank you.

That's going to cause a few problems come MOT time.....

I have spoken to three MOT places and they all said the only reason it would fail is if the light on the dashboard is illuminated. I will bypass that light, so there won't be a problem. :-)

Do you happen to know how many splines there are?

Does the airbag warning light need to light when the ignition goes on and then the light has to go off?
Your insurance company, may, if they are aware of what you are doing decide they will not insure you.
The government are considering banning the "tampering" of cars. This "modification" is the ammunition they need.

I'm sure "the Government" won't care about a one off modification like mine...so it won't really be ammunition for them. :} And based on the actions of the last 20 months, it is clear that the Government also do whatever they want to...like banning the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030...so forgive me, but I don't care that much about them.

I have also sorted out insurance for a "modified car".

Do you happen to know how many spindles there are?

I have in front of me a 75 steering wheel; together with a moto-lita boss, that was fitted to my last P6.

Forget the splines (80+ on the 75)

The boss is about 0.25 inches smaller in diameter.

Sorry about that.

Regards

Mike

Thanks Mike. I might do a bit of "genius welding" to match the two up. I really like the P5 wheel. :}

Leaving aside the legalities for a moment; I have thought a little deeper about this, from an engineering point of view.

There is ample meat on the boss to drill it out, and being aluminium, I suppose you could use a scrap 75 steering column as a broach, and gradually engineer the boss to fit.

You would need (ideally) a hydraulic press.

You also need to reproduce the taper.

Having said this, the legalities surrounding the air bag issue would prevent me from actually doing it.

The easiest way to do this would be to cut the centre out from a scrap 75 wheel, enlarge the other wheel to accept the centre, press in into place then seam weld the rear and front.

That's what I am thinking of doing if there isn't an "off the shelf" option. Cheers!
