French approve ban on domestic flights!

Blimey! As if the aviation industry is not at rock bottom already, Travellers are going to have to take the train instead of a domestic flight in France to lower carbon emissions. https://www.dtnext.in/News/World/202...ic-flights.vpf

If you're in the market for a Boeing 737 I'd imagine they'll be going quite cheap.

That's handy.----We seem to be at a crossroads for the airliners. A couple of years ago, at weekends, it was possible to count up to 20 or so vapour trails way up above us. Now a very rare sight and going to be even rarer with no domestic flights.-----

:smilie_re: Trains over that way, Sir.

Interesting article, however We really are in danger of being overrun by these climate zealots. Let it find its own level to the changeover. Wouldn’t like to think how that would impact my area? Inverness, Shetland and Aberdeen regional airports nomoaa. All Servicing the islands with essentials and oil/gasindustry to keep your homes in the South warm.:duh:

Deep sea trawling for finite resources and trash the marine life for anyone? That’s the future. Cant wait for COP26 to begin in Glasgow when more than 25,000 delegates are going to fly in from round the globe.

All de-carbonisation time lines for all modes of transport seem to be being brought forward, The UK is behind France in their emission commitments at this moment in time and the UK government is being urged to set a date for the UK HGV diesel ban before 2040.

2025 sees the truck manufacturers emission standards brought into line with car emission standards & they stand to be fined €millions if they go over the much stricter Euro Cat 7 limits. https://www.commercialfleet.org/news...hgv-diesel-ban

That new French law is only going to affect the people who travel short distances by air, if the journey is longer than 2.5 hours by train flights are still aloud. In my experience of flying it is probably quicker to use the train on such a trip.

My guess is once these new laws start having and effect on the economies of the world they will be '' delayed'' or ''put on hold'' or what ever the government want to call it.

I am not a lover of the thought of going electric for vehicles but if all you use your car for is commuting to work, shopping or running the children to school why not? It will keep the cities cleaner and most cars commuting spend most of there time idling or traveling at 5mph or less it makes sense.

It will be interesting to see what the Police use for Patrol cars? Yes Electric will be fast but how are they going to cope with 60k miles + a year.

I am not sure why we are even bothering until the big polluters of the world start doing something? Places like the USA. China and India produce 100 times more pollution than we do.

Apparently one of the biggest sources of totally unnecessary pollution is the electricity generated for processing power needed to "mine" bitcoins, equivalent to a small country, I read. Many of these computer processing plants are in China where coal is burnt to generate electricity. What a complete waste of energy and what harm to the planet.

Yes, travel by train in France will definitely lower carbon emissions.

A 2 1/2 hour train journey in the UK will not get you very far what with all our delays and cancellations!

mileshawk56 12th April 2021 08:13

The French travel policy was decided some years ago in favour of rail travel and against france only air travel. The results are their high speed City/area links. I dont know if at the time the decision was made pollution was the main reason? it may have been they saw the opportunity to up date the rail system. Chris S.
