Exhaust Paste
 

Hi, can anyone recommend an exhaust paste that wont go all powery a year later. The inner skin of my back box is fine so I tend to dress up the rusted parts of the outer skin once a year for the mot, but it would be nice if I could fine a paste that hasnt gone white and power like a year later and need digging out before replacing, i've tried all the popular brands.

You're fighting a losing battle. My past experience is the same as yours; pastes, bandages, gauze and patches are strictly temporary and frankly a waste of time and money. With exhausts, the only solution is renewal.

You say that your inner skin is fine. It's only an MOT failure if there's a leak of gases. My original back box lasted several years in that condition so keep going! :}

I have been there before but is simple, As Simon says it needs a new one they are not worth repairing

Once a year isn't much for a top up of gungum or the like. The original back box on my 04 had that treatment for 4 years straight. Just a wire brush and skim over on the approach to each mot. Still going when I sold the car. Wish I hadn't sold it but that's another story!

TreeI was adding Gum Gum exhaust paste to my back box for a good couple of years. As you say the outer skin was suffering whilst the inner skin was solid. I decided to change mine though earlier this year as the weld connecting the pipe to the back box was splitting. Once off, the full extent of rot became apparent. Hidden away on the top, it was rotten as a pear. I can't complain considering it was nearly 20 years old. I replaced it with a Klarius back box, and it now sounds a little "meaty" if that's the best way to describe it. It's not to intrusive but you can tell the quality is not of what the original was

Give one of ours a try when the time comes - designed to be as quiet as the originals, and made to the same clamshell design :)
