powerfold wiring crossbody loom

i'm trying to retrofit powerfold mirrors to my car, and people say you can look undearneath the steering wheel area to see the wiring and if it has the relevant cabling. I've looked and I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Can anyone tell me from this picture what cluster of wires is the ones I'm after, or better still from this photo if they can spot the ones I need? i know it is said to be orange and orange/red. I can see a few candidates assuming i'm looking at the right bundle?

Also does anyone have pictures of the infamous door connector at both body and door side that so often requires doors to come off to thread cables through?

i'm really having trouble visualising what is required. I see a rubber conduit beginning half way down the front door and curls upwards and across into the door jamb, so I assume the cables that lead off the powerfold drivers mirror need to go inside the door skin, down and through that , be worked around the inside of conduit into where it meets the body of the car. But where are the connectors themselves and how many are there? Are there 1 inside the door frame at the bottom on the leading most edge of the hinge, and is there one inside the car footwell area? Pics would be a fantastic help!

Few pictures below, if you have the wires to the connector block then you don't need to feed any across the car.

You could tell if the wires are present from the loom you have pictured but even if you find out one way or another it won't help you to do the job unless you are not bothering if you don't have the wires to the doors

If the wires are not there then you need to take wires across the inside of the car to the other mirror but you need to take the doors off anyway to do the job so go for it and just be prepared to run the extra wires if you need to

The conduit you refer to has to have wires passed through as you thought but with the doors off its quite an easy task

many thanks Rob, i'm a bit ahead of myself as I dont have the passenger side mirror yet. sounds like best to wait for it to turn up, then just jump in both boots and see what I have, as nothint wiil hsave me from pulling of those doors.

or is this possible with loosening wings possible?

This the wring loom from the door post, drivers side. If you look under the steering wheel and look to the right where the loom goes to the door post, a little awkward, but you shoud see the orange wires if they are there.
Mines a 2004 facelift and they were present.

thanks. still I don't have a powerfold mirror for the passenger side, but once I have that sorted out, and I'm trying hard to get one reconstituted from broken bits, then I will see where I am.

edit****

had a look already at this before, my pic above is what i saw. I can't work out your pic - where is that taken from please? I cannot see for the life of me where I'm supposed to be looking

Then you just need the mirrors switches and these retro fit wires rather than changing the whole door looms :smilie_re:

Well I've already got them, so that's not the worst news I've had all day.

I will just have to feed that wiring kit across the car. Was just hoping it might not be necessary as one less job, but since I can't work out how to check, I might as well just give up and put it on anyway.

Still, lets be completely honest, the chances are I will screw this up totally and come crying for help at a nano anyway. This would be tricky for anyone. Its laughable to think I might be able to do it

You and me both. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on here, for whom this sort of thing seems to be really easy – but, despite being moderately intelligent, technically minded, and a computer engineer, I found it extremely difficult, so don’t feel bad if you do.

Two heroes at the nano meet did all the door stuff for me, then we discovered that I didn’t have the cross-body stuff. Nothing could be done there and then, so I only had a working driver’s door powerfold… I ended up, back home, taking the doors off, and poking a pair of wires across under the dash.

Getting them through the bit of the bodywork which meets the doors was a serious laugh but, if I can do it, so can you if you're sufficiently patient.

The connectors weren’t present either, so I ended up soldering the wires at each end. This will only ever be a problem if the doors have to come off again, I reckon.

Happy to chat if it would help ;)

Good guide. Trouble is though, reading any guide and actually doing it... if you haven't done that sort of thing before...

I like the bits where he says:

"Not forgetting that wiring up the mirrors causes lots of cursing and swearing grazed knuckles and frayed nerves trying to thread the wires through"

"Have fun trying to get the cables fed through the door and rubber wiring protector." Yes, that's the most hilarious bit.
