Rover 75 V6 2.5 Timing Belt
 

Hello,

As a new member I am trying to find out when the timing belt should be changed. The car is a LHD 1999 Rover 75 V6 2.5 and has covered 48980 miles. I live in the Netherlands and find it difficult to obtain accurate information. Some garage say change at 60,000, some say 90,000, some also say its not a belt but a chain.

Could someone please advise?

I purchased the car directly from MG/Rover after their closure. The car apparently was known as the "Development Car" and had only covered 21000 miles. Although "fully" loaded with everything, including some things never formally released. Not everything works as it should and I am trying to put the car back into its complete, "former glory".

It also has alot of computer data cables/connectors etc in the boot and under the drivers side dash as well as roof mounted microphones for driver communication.

Should any former employee of MG/Rover read this and know the car in question could they be so kind at to provide any information known about it.

The change point is based on time or distance - 6 years or 90k miles is the recommended. Your 99 car certainly needs a belt change now. There are three belts to change on the KV6 and it is best to get the tensioner changed also, plus the water pump.

Belts are no later than 90,000 miles or when the car is 6 years old so if they have not been done already even with the low mileage they need doing

But! and I will play devils advocate here the retail price of the older cars are now low enough to make me wonder will most owners (not enthusiastic members obviously ;) ) actually do the work?

I.e. if the car is only worth say £1200-£2000 will people really stomach spending hundreds on belts and we do see quotes of up to £1200 at times that may remain perfectly ok for the length of time an owner keeps the car?

I bet a lot of owners will not be getting the work done or as we see so often on ebay, you see cars for sale around the 90,000 mile mark

Greetings from the far South. I wish we had someone like Lates over here. Almost worthwhile offering him a free holiday in NZ in exchange for doing the cambelt change. My 1999 80,000kms car is due on a time basis but not on mileage. Quoted costs over here vary so much, one so called local Rover agent is quoting 14 - 16 hours for the job while others are in the 8 hour range.
I have accepted that it makes sense to change the tensioner and water pump, but is it also prudent to replace the idler gear.
I have owned Rovers since I bought a new 2000TC in 1970, but I love this car. Lates, how about opening a NZ branch?
