Rover 75 2004 CDTI Aircon Compressor.
 

Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced new A/C compressor for CDTI 75. The garage have tried a couple of 2nd hand ones both of which were still grinding probably due to the hole in the condenser which was missed, now fixed.

I have a second hand fully working one from a 2004 cdti

A lot of used ones are useless due to overheating caused by fans that have previously been faulty, and only working on high speed, I’ve chucked a fair few out during my time.

Alan,

Be careful with this diagnosis. If your condenser was holed then the refrigerant gas would escape rapidly and the compressor would stop running, thus protecting it from damage.

I had considered other options. It only make a noise when the ac is engaged and is noise free when econ mode engaged it increases and decreases with the revs of the engine and when changing from drive to reverse (automatic) the noise disappears for a second or 2. It’s had a new cortico crankshaft pulley and a bottom tensioner (the one with the adjustment). When testing the A\C system it always passed the vac test even with a hole in the condenser. After fitting of the condenser they failed to put in the correct amount of oil twice and only put in 20ml both times, I have had them put in the correct amount today 100ml (shout out to Jules for this) but it is still making the same whining/grinding noise. My thoughts were ?compressor, ?idler tensioner, or some other rotating thingamajig.

Also on the first regas the a\c was blowing hot and the fan was running in takeoff mode (fast)then the fan would not turn off evan when econ mode was until the engine was switched off, the next regas fixed this and the A\C was blowing cold just noisy.

Anyone have any suggestion before splashing out.

Al, I don’t know about you but from your story I wouldn’t have a lot of confidence in whoever is working on your air conditioning. :o If it’s someone who is using an automatic machine then I suggest that you book a home visit from an independent mobile specialist. Ask him to extract your refrigerant and tell you the weight. That’s the first thing to check. I wouldn’t buy a compressor yet.

Sounds like the guys working on your car don’t know their ear hole from their A hole

I had a mobile A/C technician come out as the garage i use are normally very good but I think they are too busy and rush things a little and as they had fitted a compressor already and hadn’t fixed the problem I wanted a proper diagnosis. They put the UV dye in and it lit up around the condenser. So I bought the condenser and my garage fitted it but they ran out of time to put Gas it up and I needed the car for work. So I used kiwi-fit to re-gas, whilst at work, as I thought they couldn’t muck that up. After speaking to Jules I don’t think they put in enough oil as it needs a bit more on replacement of condenser etc. I used it as it was really hot after it was gassed up by kwik-fit but it slowly started blowing hotter air and the high speed fan was on all the time, I went back to kiwi-fit after speaking to jules and they claim to have now put in the correct oil its certainly cold but there is a whining/metalic grinding when the A/C is on and goes away completely on econ mode.

So: Could it have overheated and cooked the compressor.
Does the system need to be completely flushed through incase there is some debris/etc
Also found this compressor on amazon claims to be for a LN TD4 will it fit and is it any good.
