Manual gearbox drain and fill plugs problem.
Help! Trying to change the gear oil on my 2001 CDT, both plugs have a star shaped hole, the nearest fit I have is a 50 torx bit, but it seems too slack and likely to round off the hole if I put full force on my 12" bar. (from being slack in the star shaped hole, it turned far enough in the hole to get stuck, and needed force to turn it backwards to get the tool out). Should I be using a known other tool that fits the hole properly? If I round it off, I will never get it out.

Thanks, Arctic. Yes, your pics look like mine. I was so convinced the holes were star shaped, I didn't even try an Allen key, despite historic posts saying that's what they'd used, I thought they must be talking about a different box/year/model/auto. I'll have another go tomorrow when I've warmed it up.

They're 8mm A/F hex Andrew, so Allen keys are the way forward......make sure you can undo the filler before draining the old, you will need 1 1/2 litres of MTF 94, a funnel and a section of garden hose.

Thanks again, guys. No ordinary Allen key would undo those plugs, but I have a set of hex bits that fit my 3/8 drive breaker bar, so, confident that I have the right tools, hose and funnel, I'll have a go later today when both car and barn floor will hopefully be a bit warmer! BTW, what is so special about MTF94? I was going to use some SS75/90 I just happen to have on the shelf.

Thanks Brian, just checked it out on t'internet before you answered, and it's to do with the friction modifiers for the synchro clutches (wot- u -sed!) I actually have some Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75/80 which conforms to all sorts of BMW specs, but I'll keep it for my Mitsubishi, as intended and get the right stuff. The Rover is running well, but the box is sometimes just a little notchy these cold mornings. 22K miles in last 13 months, so it deserves some maintenance.

I would agree but never tried it, could it still be done without removing the battery box etc? At the time we had to re-fill the lads gearbox because of changing the inner seal which had started to leak, therefore we had the driveshaft out as well so we used the bottle pump with the hook and pumped the oil into the box, we had the car on ramps & axle stands to keep the car level for the re-fill. |
