DD TV remote control.

I have an Xtrons DD unit with a dvb - t box connected for Freeview TV. After an extended period without use the TV is unresponsive to the remote control.I checked the handset batteries and found they had discharged.I got the old batteries out ok and cleaned the terminals up and installed new batteries but the TV is still not responding to the handset.The box itself is ok because I have a picture.

Could the battery discharge have damaged the circuitry of the handset?Any suggestions gratefully received.Thanks

Just to clarify,when I say the old batteries has discharged I meant they had leaked.

does not sound encouraging does it . did you see any signs of contamination or corrosion colour changes in there ?

It look very clean in the battery compartment now,most of the corrosion came out on the old batteries.I've sprayed some WD in there.I'm going to check the make of the box and see if I can track down a replacement remote,be a pity if I have to replace the box as well.The lesson is to remove the batteries when not in use.

Iv had a look on th interscreen regarding using WD40 and it says this.

It dries quickly, leave no residue and removes over 95% of common surface contaminants, making it the best at cleaning electrical contacts and for optimal performance of equipment. Safe and ideal for use on printed circuit boards, controls, battery terminals, switches, precision instruments and electric panels.

My self i usually put a bit of contact cleaner on a cotton bud and use that, if i ever have this problem.

I also clean th little transmitter on th end of th remote control and also th reciever on th equimpment/TV if its visable.

Another way to see if its working, is get your mobile phone and select camera. Point it at th IR transmitter and press any button. If its flashing red its working. Iv just tried this on a remote and sure enough it flashes.

Lastly for now... If it is working can you pair it to th TV to make sure it asnt forgot who is who..

I'm very pleased to report all handset functions are now working perfectly again.RESULT :}

Thanks chaps for the helpful thoughts and suggestions.I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to revive it and would urge people to remove the batteries when not in use as it's very easy to forget about them when the TV is not used for a while.

Truth be known Phil I'm not entirely sure.One of the pair of batteries slides down into the battery compartment so the spring contact it sits on is not easy to reach and clean.I scraped it best I could with a long thin screwdriver and sprayed inside with a liberal dose of WD and left it overnight.Following day gently tapped the handset a few times to release any remaing corrosion,placed in some new batteries and hey presto.Looks like the WD worked it's usual magic :shrug::}

Im glad its mended. I think we all have in th past messed with things only to find out we have mended them, but not quite sure how. Cleaning th contacts obviously helped.

I have a feeling the WD worked it's way around the circuit board too overnight. Who knows for sure,I'm just glad it did the trick and saved having to buy a new box. :}
