2004 Rover 75 Con SE CDTi 2.0 Auto ECU Swap

Hi all!

I purchased my first Rover 75 and it was glorious. For a day.

I started getting the dreaded EP error on my dash and after draining the plenum it didn't improve. It now doesn't start at all.

I've removed it and cleaned it as all of the guides on this forum explain and it still won't have it. Just says EP.

So, I searched high and low for an ECU kit for the car. I found one on eBay for a rather reasonable £95.

It's from an MG ZT Tourer MK2, it has the same engine and gearbox as my Rover 75 and the ECU serial NNN500340 is the same.

The kit contains...

ECU (It has the same serial number as my ECU)
A new key fob
BCU or body control unit
RF Signaller
Immobiliser

My question is, once everything is replaced, do I need to do anything else?

(I also have a seized rear caliper, the drivers side back seats are soaking, the thermostat is awaiting replacement and some bulbs need sorting. One step at a time.)

Thought the EP message was gearbox related - automatic? Have you tried a half hour battery disconnected reset? State of battery, what voltage at the terminals?

A link to the ECU kit would be handy, but as long as the main ECU, immobiliser (EWS) & transponder chip(s) within the backs of the keyfobs are all from the same car you should be alright.

But try the battery reset first and make sure the battery is fully charged, these cars are fussy.

Regards

I've disconnected the battery several times and gave it a charge overnight, didnt make any difference. I've been around every fuse going to see if theres any interference and nope NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- all.

I was worried that I'd have to code injectors and all the rest of it but it seems that wont be an issue.

I will update when I've replaced everything.

From a MG tourer you say? that's not brilliant when you own a Cimmaron Green Rover 75 saloon though :getmecoat:

At the very minimum make sure the NNW number is NNW006011 as well as the part number being NNN500340.

If for sake of argument the NNW number is NNW005991 then it's not right for your car

Why not simply have the original ECM repaired and save yourself a load of grief?

There are alternatives to bodging it, and wasting time and energy, as well as the risk of things not working as you expect, airbags for instance....... won't work as tourer and saloons are configured differently, and the master coding key for the car is held in the immobiliser ;)

Have fun

Brian :D

I didn't think to check the NNW number, which luckily is the same. I understand there may be configuration issues, I don't have cruise control etc so I'm not too worried about that.

I did consider getting the ECU repaired. I spoke to Rover Link "onth Wirral" who advised the last ECU they sorted cost £550. I don't have that kind of money and for a car that cost me £900 to start with, I wouldn't go that far.

I saw another on eBay who repairs them for £195 but they want to see the car. Which is pretty set on not moving at the moment.

I have followed practically every thread for this issue and nothing has cured the issue. The kit cost me £95 which is considerably less than the other solutions I have considered.

Unless someone knows another cost effective method that guarantees a working ECU?

Well the eBay seller who repairs them for £195, I'll let you hazard a guess where they get them from, also Rimmer Bros where a replacement costs upward of £400, where do you think they come from too ;)

Anyway, Big Russ can sort you out a plug and play replacement in the post, as can others who shall remain nameless

Me personally, I've got about eighty working diesel ECM sitting gathering dust, and I tipped another forty today.

PM Me a quote for an ECU and the process if you would? If I can keep the original ECU at a reasonable cost I shall :D
