Fan problem?
 
Evening all,

I notice another user has posted a thread on their radiator fan today. Apologies, not trying to steal your thunder!

I was checking my recent undertray fittings were all still there and then looked at the fan and thought you know I've never seen this move once. I have a 2003 CDT. I believe I have a three speed fan as I have no resistor. I only have two tabs where I assume a resistor would go.

My temp dial always goes up to 9pm and stays there steady. I did a bit of reading and tried to set the fan going by turning the ignition on and putting the demister on full blast on lo temp. Tried various combos of air con, econ, engine off, engine on etc. The fan doesn't move. I've just been for a half hour drive on the motorway and pulled up to idle, hoping I'd see the fan come on but no.

Could anyone point me in the direction and tell me how worried I should be? :D God knows how long I've been driving it like this but I've had no problems.

As you are a diesel owner you need not worry, the engine never gets hot enough to turn on the fan.


If you have checked fuses and relays, the chances are your fan brushes are worn, if you want to replace them it can be done easily.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your reply. I've not checked fuses etc as its dark but will do at some point tomorrow.

I'm going to show my ignorance here, but what would be the benefits to getting the fan going if the diesel engine never gets hot enough to need it? When it comes to the engine and its cooling system, please assume almost 100% ignorance on my part :D

The benefit of a working fan is that you can run the aircon when stationary and it wont overload the compressor.

If your not worried about aircon, switch it off and drive without worry, I guarantee you wont overheat unless you lose water somehow.

Hi Colvert,

I'm not sure I know what you mean but with the air con switched on, I looked through the grille and the radiator fan was not turning. My air con seems to work okay when driving. Less so when stationary. Again I find this all confusing but I guess the air flow generated while driving explains this?

As above having a proper working fan will aid the air conditioning to be really cool, as the low speed works in conjunction with the air con, i doubt you will ever get the temp high enough for the high speed to kick in unless we have a super super hot summer and you are towing a caravan up a step climb, or stuck in traffic for ages.

Having said that we all now it is always best to have a fully working part do as it was meant to do, so personally i would fix it.

Remember 9 times out of 10 when the low speed fails on a four wire three speed fan it takes the medium speed with it, leaving only the high speed, that is if it caught early other wise all speeds could be not working, you will only know once the fan is opened up.

Thanks for your input, Arctic. I feel the same way about preferring things to work as they should and this will bug me slightly but with the current restrictions I am not putting the car under a lot of strain and don't need the AC given the season.

While I wait for the restrictions to ease I can spend time reading more about everything involved and decide if I'm up for trying to fix it...or I can wait for the restrictions to ease so I can rope someone into helping me fix it haha.

Just to let you know Andrew that your temperature gauge will steadfastly remain at the nine o'clock position for any coolant temperature between 75 and 115 degrees C! :eek: It will therefore give you a false sense of security so ..... as Arctic says:
