MOT extended for 6 months
 

Just been announced on the TV. Any MOT due from late March extended for 6 months. "but you must keep your car in a roadworthy condition"
hopefully more details to follow. Apparently a statement from a government minister and announced on GMB.

interesting, I have an MOT booked in for this coming Friday, ( MOT expires 3rd April ) do I cancel it, what if It went ahead ( and failed ). :shrug:

Important bit here I guess:
All cars, vans and motorcycles which usually would require an MOT test will be exempted from needing a test from 30 March 2020. Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition, and garages will remain open for essential repair work. Drivers can be prosecuted if driving unsafe vehicles.

Legislation will be introduced on March 30 and will come into immediate effect for 12 months, following a short consultation with key organisations. Drivers will still need to get their vehicle tested until the new regulations come into place, if they need to use it.

Safety is key, which is why garages will remain open for essential repair work

But...what about all the MOT stations and their income, employees and all that goes with that? There's a silver lining for us drivers and owners...but a dark cloud for those stations...they will have to turn their hand to servicing.

Imagine the rush for MOTs once that 6 month period is over. You won't be able to book one. I assume that you can still test a car ahead of the suspension period finishing...if we can't the rush will see many cars without valid tests on day 1.

ha ha so those that have been without an mot for months can now drive for another 6 with no mot? If the existing MOT runs out after for example 20/03/2020 ok but if mot ran out before then, then the exemption should not apply.
I know a vehicle where mot ran out 28th October 2019 and been used almost daily until the last 2 or 3 weeks, was used in 2018 for months with no mot

That means I assume people with no mot can tax their vehicle and once the restriction is lifted will get away with saying oh I forgot to get it mot'ed.

I would check with your insurance company before going on the road without an mot unless you are going to a pre booked mot


I appreciate for the honest people this will be a welcome relief, for the dishonest oh boy wont they be laughing.

A difficult one for government and they are doing their "best". I bet the opposition are glad they are the opposition right now :)

I took my little Punto the other day, I was hoping it would be OK after my not being able to see for six months, so no jobs got done on it. As it happened it failed and had some advisories, the failure was a tyre with a split on the inside, the advisories were two other tyres and the rear springs have some flaky rust, so I got a new tyre yesterday and an MOT, the advisories can wait.
I hope everyone gets through this OK.

I'd guess that, assuming your MOT is not already expired, then probably cancelling it should be OK?

Well, the test on the ZT-T runs out in May from memory...so if the madness has blown over a bit and we have more freedom of movement, I think I'll just take the car for a test for peace of mind and having all bases covered.

It's rather like the no MOT needed on a classic...lots of people get one anyway to help with insurance cover in the case of an accident.

I just hope the local MOT station will still be going - best we all try and give them business as usual where possible! Wonder if the Govt. have a plan to help the stations through this time where test numbers are bound to fall.

Perhaps it would have been better to implement a rolling month on month suspension on testing until the COVID-19 issues subside enough to allow some degree of normality?

If your vehicle tax runs out while you’re self-isolating

You need a valid MOT (unless your vehicle is exempt) to renew your vehicle tax.
You should register your vehicle as off the road (SORN) if both:

• your MOT and vehicle tax are both due to run out
• you’re not able to get your vehicle tested because you’re self-isolating

When you no longer need to self-isolate

You must not drive your vehicle before you take it to its MOT.

1. Book your MOT test.
2. Tax your vehicle again once it has passed its MOT test.

This is quite clear surely, unless you have reason to self isolate, book MOT and go, just stand clear by 6' 6.

Effectively they have a rolling extension by extending the expiry date of MOTs back by six months from when it currently expires.
