Bonk, screetch and wine from rhs rear wheel

Good evening, everybody!

Got an iteresting issue to sort. When letting go of the handbrake after fuelling, I heard a "bonk" from the rear wheel when driving off and then a bit of a "screetch" as I drove along. The sounds reoccured when I drove the car after parking it at home.

We lifted the car up in a diy garage, but we couldn't see anything being stuck anywhere in the wheel. So I expect it's the handbrake that's shot. What's the worst case? The rear wheel being locked completely? In that case, the car can only be driven to the nearest garage.

Your thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,
Erik, Rover enthusiast from Sweden.

I recon one of the shoe retaining screws has pulled through the backplate and is rattling around in the drum. Needs sorting as a matter of urgency.

Would this a decent diy? Or do I need parts?

To do the job with Rover parts you would need to change the backplates but there are workarounds if your backplates are otherwise rust free.
There are shoe retaining kits you can buy from other makes of car where you can feed the pin in from the back and through the backplate and secure the shoes with spring and washer in the hub. before you ask I cannot remember the one I used :o

This happened to one of my 75s a while back - I was able to temporarily relieve the seizing/screeching by reversing the car for a foot or two. This allowed me to drive the car as far as my mechanic, who fortunately was only 1 or 2 kilometres away. IIRC replacing the backplates cured the problem.

Dave land rover ones are good for that work round fix. ;)

these look to be adaptable also, if you used the cups behind the back plate and on the shoe.

If it's the shoe retainer pins that have pulled through the location slots (due to backplate corrosion) it's either new backplates (definitely available from trader DMGR on here, think they were doing a special complete assembly offer including new parking brake shoes) or you can have the enlarged pin slots built up with a bit of weld and then fettle (hand file or grind) to the correct size - or source the repair kit which is probably just a dished/slotted washer and new pins/springs.

NB Artic has found everything you might need https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-SIER...oAAOSw2Fldg5Gk, brand new for £5

Thank you very much. A friend of mine has got the parts, we'll get cracking on Thursday. If the horrible sound reoccurs, I'll remove shoes all together and live without the handbrake for a couple of days.

And I wonder who that is !

Biltema (motor spares outlet) have got the Sierra retainers that Arctic linked to so if your brake shoes are otherwise OK we could get a set of those. But got all the bits except the new discs, which I hope you've now ordered.

I'll put the coffee on for a 10am arrival ...

Regards
