cooling Fan

Asking for a friend.

I know this may have been asked many times before but I cant see anything with the same symptoms

135 diesel 2004 From cold or hot as soon as you switch the ignition on the cooling fan starts running, when you switch the ignition of it will continue to run on for a few seconds before stopping.

So any ideas as to the cause ie stuck relay, wiring in the wheel arch etc.

Hi John.
Your friends car when the ignition is set to II from cold or hot, is the A/C switched to the off position ?

If not and is on auto it will start right away, and maybe run for a few seconds after turning off.

check and report back

Hello Steve , That was my first thought, But no the AC is OFF..Also when you turn it off and take the key out all the ignition lights stay on and the fan runs for maybe 15/20 seconds, Then it all shuts down, The fan runs all the time even when driving. I dont know if it makes a difference but it is an Auto..Gear Box.

Hi John.
Sounds like it could have PCB trouble, have you tried pressing Econ to see if it makes any difference, it needs sorting other wise the brushes will wear down rapidly, you and your friend, are the right place, drop French Mike a PM or contact him to have a look at the PCB.

Hello again Steve,

OK, So where is the PCB located? as there does not appear to have the Box that was next to my Fan before I swapped it over. Not sure, Currently have the front off and cant see a Box where I thought there should be one  I originally thought it could be a relay stuck. I suppose I could try another fan unit and see if that alters any thing..

Hi John.
The PCB will be inside the black control box attached to the fan top right hand corner.

Sometimes people do move the control box into the engine bay so also take a look there around the battery at the front is popular.

OK Steve Ive found it thanks to the photo,, So now there has been a slight change in format,, Now when you switch off all the ignition lights go out. But the fan carries on for the 15/20 seconds then switches off.. so the next plan of action is to try another working fan, Plug it in and then see what happens. I have messaged French Mike but not heard back yet..John Oh one more thing, It is fitted with a Kenlow fan so it is not the original, dont know if that makes a difference?

Hi John.
The Kenlow fan is a different beast, and we have change a few due to failing at the meets, i would remove it and put an original one on.

Morning Steve, The kenlow hasnt failed, thats the problem it just keeps going:}

Any way I am borrowing a couple of fans which I will plug into the loom and see if they work in as much that they dont come on straight away, and only comes on with the A/C..

Other than that I will start swapping relays in the engine compartment fuse box:shrug:

This is the problem when some one has been in there before, you never know what they have done

HI John.
I agree it as not failed completely, but it as some kind of fault, if i remember right some of those Kenlow fans have there own relays inline with the wiring.

Jules would be your best man to contact as he used to fit these to our cars way back about 10 years ago.

Can you get up any photos, can you see any relays apart from the original ones for the car.
