ABS light, no braking shudder

Good morning folks,

My friend just took our car for the new number plate and when he started it the ABS light came on and stayed on. There is no shuddering or other unusual feeling when braking. I don't know yet if the light went out after the engine stared and then came back on or stayed on from the time the engine was started.

He asked me if it could be some light surface rust on a reluctor or sensor because the car had been sitting for about 3 weeks. It is normal for the friction surface of brake rotors to flash/surface rust when a car sits for a long time.

I thought maybe, but also, the car has just recently had new front brake pads installed, so thinking sensor connector or wire.

Cheers,
Glenn

My friend just messaged to say the light went off again while driving. That sure sounds like a sensor wire or connector.

Hi Glenn.
It could be the back plates as they tend to corrode and drop bits of rust between the sensor and the bearing, which then in turn can damage the built in magnetic ring, so worth getting the discs off, and the bearing to check the back plate once you have it in your hands.;) then again it could just be the sensor, I recently changed one out for a local lad, had to drill it out in the end as it snapped off trying to pull it out.

Hi Steve,

I do hope it isn't a break off a rusty seized sensor and drill out job. My glimmer of hope is that the front brake pads were recently changed. Thank you, though. When I get there and actually start addressing these jobs I'm sure I will be writing with questions and asking for confirmations.

Cheers,
Glenn
