Pets Corner, natter on all you like and post pics of your pets and pet problems

Well, today I collected my puppy. He's an English Springer Spaniel. I've called him Oscar. Please, don't laugh, or if you do, don't tell me you have.;);)
(I'm useless at thinking of names.)
Anyway, this is the first dog I've had, since leaving home. Mother keeps Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
I'm a little worried about how he's going to react when left alone. He can't stand being alone and starts howling. Has anyone any advice they could offer me? I don't want the neighbours complaining.:)
As I'm off work til Tuesday, I plan to leave him for a bit at a time and see if he gets used to it.

andy 25th May 2008 09:07

you have got to be TOUGH

Give him something of your unwashed (smelly!) old clothes to bed down on,
it would have been good to have some bedding from the bitch to make him feel secure, but the big thing is do not sympathise, only go to him when he is quiet
The big thing with dog training is only reinforce behavior you want, and telling him to be quiet, is in dog terms attention, and its amazing how quickly they learn 'bad' things. Ignore him, dont even look at him if he is doing something unwanted.
With a pup smell is a big part of their life, so dont be in too much of a hurry to change his bedding.
Also I am a great believer in crate training, it is not in any way cruel and pays big dividends in times to come, the dog feels safe and secure as its his place, but dont use it as a punishment as that will defeat the object.
We always have made our dogs bed in a crate, it makes life so much easier.
Andy

Are we getting a Pic of this little Poop factory? :)

Blue Ghost 25th May 2008 09:41

shows us what he looks like

uk_dave&gill 25th May 2008 09:43

Best of luck with the new addition!

We've just got one as well - she's a Mini Chocolate Labradoodle and we've called her Madison. She's 8 weeks old and is tiny! She's great so far and is really bonding with her "sister", Charlie, who is a Standard 'Doodle

Could get some pics up if anyone is interested, but don't really want to hijack Phil's thread! (Here's an idea: Can we have a Pet's Corner forum?!)

I'm hopeless with puppy advice, but I could get Gill to give you some tips - she's a dab hand!

Phil 25th May 2008 09:44

Thanks Andy, I will get a pic up asap.

Keep them all in this one thread please or I will just have to move them in here. This thread is for pics and stories, advice etc. It is a sticky thread so you will always find it near the top of the social forum.

Blimey, I'm getting in trouble today! ;-)

(Came back to this thread from an email notification and didn't realise that it had become an "all encompassing pet's corner" thread.... Thought it was still Phil's "New Puppy" thread)

Hi Phil.

Congrates on your newest family member, i am sure you will have years of fun together. The best advise i can give you is....

Inform your neighbours to explain you have a new puppy and state you are training the pup and their could be some barking for the first week and apologise.

Leaving Oscar for the first time, do not make a fuss that you are going out. Do not leave Oscar for prologed periods at this stage, 15 mins first day, 30 mins second day etc etc. Make sure he has plenty of things to occupy him such as a radio left on, toys such as a KONG filled with KONG PASTE or such like, maybe a rolla treat ball, if you are using a crate same applies. When you return make sure you make a big fuss of him and reward if he's been good.

hope this helps, any problems please pm me, its my job lol

Persever and remember you are the boss not Oscar.

carlpenn 27th May 2008 09:21

Podge !! We have a Cat just like yours !!

She came from a Rescue Centre and they had found her after she had been hurt, a Concrete Slab had been dropped on her tail and as a result the Vets had to amputate her Tail.

She is a lovely cat, though it is taking some hard work to settle her fully, we think she was very badly abused by her previous owners.

We have two cats, Boo, a Black Cat and Smudge the aforementioned one.

Hi Dac, what would you suggest I could do for when he comes out of his crate after night, he comes down squats down and pees straight away.

Phil 28th May 2008 19:00

Wheres the timid little cuddlepup gone? Someones swapped him with an inquisitive energetic biting nipping little rascal?!

Dacman 28th May 2008 19:29

Hi Phil.

There are 2 reasons he could be peeing straight away.
1) Over exitement, therefore do not make a fuss of Oscar untill he has sorted it outside, see below.
2) Oscar not wanting to fowl his 'home' , and obviously is busting to go when you let him out of his 'home'. You need to let him out of his home and immediatly take him outside, if he makes it and pee's outside you must make a big fuss and tell him in an encouraging way 'good boy'.

If he does pee in the house do not clean it up with products that contain ammonia, bleach, many disinfectants etc, this will encourage Oscar to fowl in the same place due to the ammonia smell. Use products like ' formula H by pet life', or johnsons clean and safe, available in many a good pet shop including the one i work at ;)
Other products to look at are. 'wee wee pads' or 'swifty(made by sherleys or beapher as its now known)' both are effective in toilet training.

Weres your puppy? lol you were the one who brought an English Springer lol .

hope it helps

Thanks Dac, he's a great little chap, he has worn himself out now and is snuggled up next to me on the floor. I guess the nipping is just teething and not anger?

Dacman 28th May 2008 20:21

Nipping? How old is Oscar?

Could be teething, if you buy a rope bone toy, wet it and freeze it, this will act like a babys teething ring and cool and massage Oscars teeth and gums.

Continued nipping would need to be stopped, depending how old Oscar is, maybe a very firm NO will do for now, when he is a bit older you can get a product called a pet corrector, basically a can of compressed air, Dogs dont like the noise and will assosiate it with being naughty and theoretically stop.

If your ever in Derby pop in and see me.

Not quite three months. His teeth are like needles. I have bought him a few things and he really does beat them up. I think he just has loads of energy and doesn't know what to do with it. When he's had his injections and I can take him for walks instead of running around the garden for a bit I imagine it'll be easier as it'll tire him more.

Sounds like you and I are mirroring each other here Phil! Our Maddy is 10 weeks old and seems very like your little "cuddlepups"! Her teeth are a nightmare, but then so were Charlie's when she was that age. She now has a jaw that can crack bone, but she is so gentle and her teeth are no longer as sharp. What we've done with this is to squeal when the little one bites us (well, Gill can squeal, I yelp!) which mirrors what would happen with other pups. Also, when we had Charlie, the kennel lady suggested (and demonstrated!) biting her on the nose if she bit us, which is again what would happen in a pup's socialising with mum - she would teach her that nipping is not acceptable. Of course, they explore the world through their mouths and noses, so you can't stop all of it, but they need to learn the acceptable levels!

When I came back from work tonight he was nipping, the girlfriend was already playing with him. She then went and did some bits and left me and Oscar to play together. I fell asleep on the floor, cuddling him, she has gone out for the evening, :hurray!!!!: he has been perfect, just cuddling me all sleepy. She's back now :eyebrowsraised: He seems different when she's around. More biting etc.

Other way around with me and Gill (Maddy is more gentle with her...) Having said that, I do play rougher! Me, Maddy and Charlie have spent the last hour sitting on the floor playing together, and they've now gone to bed fairly calm, so maybe I'm getting there at last?!

Be careful, he sounds like he could be getting posessive. Discourage the biting as much as you can, you don't need to slap his nose or anything, if he starts biting, say NO firmly and ignore him. Keep repeating til he gets the message. They have to learn very early that biting isn't acceptable. He's absolutely gorgeous!

Want to see my little madam (who;s knocked the dog guard down already and got through to the back seat).

Possesive of who? So you would suggest kicking the girlfriend out? I could go along with that. I'd love to see your little madam.:D Funnily enough, he doesn't respond to you saying no, when I give him a funny look he seems to behave for a bit.

Phil 29th May 2008 22:58

What breed is she?

lady zed 29th May 2008 23:03

She's a heinz 57. Mother was an alsation/collie cross. Father was a travelling man. Colour wise she's like a rhodesian ridgeback, she's got the black stripe down her back. She got caught on Sun so she got an injection last night and will get another tomorrow then she's getting spayed in Aug.

Def sounds as though your's is getting a bit posessive of you! He'll try and get between you soon if you're having a cuddle on the couch, mine tries to compete with me for alpha female status, but she loses :D

Phil 29th May 2008 23:09

I was going to say Rhodesian Ridgeback, she has a similar shaped body/legs. Mother had two, now one.:(

Phil 29th May 2008 23:10

Why would he get possesive of me? Surely he would be possesive of the girlfriend? Being a bloke?

Aww what a shame. Think she'll get another? It's always tough losing a pet, I grew up with a black lab called Sheila, still can't think about her without a tear coming to my eye.

She's a bit smaller than the ridgebacks but very similiar. She's hilarious, she's staring at me just now cos it's bedtime.

Na, dogs don't care about what sex the head of the pack is. Whoever is the dominant force, the one who takes care of them is the one they'll attach themselves to.

Elsa fell asleep a month or so ago, we had her when I was 13/14. She was my best mate. I think they'll let Bella be the only Ridgeback for a bit, so she can have her day as top dog. They have two Jack Russels as well.

Hi, we have two Golden Retrievers. Sam is almost 4 and Max is just 9 months and into everything. Sam never tried to bite but Max has been a little nippy so when ever he did it I would shout as if in pain, followed by a load NO, he would be so shocked that he eventually stopped. He does keep trying to retrieve me though by trying to get my wrist in his mouth whenever I come home. I have now started ignoring him when I come home until he calms down. This seems to be working pretty well. I also spend a lot of time when they are puppies sitting with them when they are eating. Putting my hand in their bowls, taking their food away and giving it back by hand sometimes so they get to know who is the leader of the pack. Both my dogs will now let me or anyone else take their food or bones from them at anytime. They are very placid and loving.

So, the loud shout followed by a stern NO definately works for me. I'll post a couple of pics later on. Good luck and enjoy. Paul

uk_dave&gill 23rd June 2008 10:50

We're doing a similar thing with Maddy (3 month old Mini Labradoodle) - OUCH! followed by NO!

We're getting there, but she's got damn sharp little teeth! Her big "sister", Charlie (20 month Standard 'Dood) was just the same, but now is as gentle as anything. She's got much bigger teeth, but much blunter too!!

We also do the food thing - makes them much less possessive and snappy!

Phil 23rd June 2008 20:43

I've been doing that. He seems to think its a game. His teeth are super sharp. He's drawn blood on numerous occasions.

Tatts 23rd June 2008 20:51

When our Lab was a pup, my hands & arms looked like they'd been through a mincing machine. Had to stop it.

So, make sure the pup has LOTS to chew on - hard rubber balls, nylabones, tennix balls, footballs etc etc etc.

Use something in your hand when playing with the pup. If you get caught, either by accident or on purpose (I know this will sound silly etc) but yelp - like a dog would do, pull your hand away and turn your back to him. I know this sounds daft, but it really worked with our dog.

Toys to amuse them:

Empty pop bottles: drop a couple of biscuits in it & superglue the top on. Keeps them occupied for ages.

Ice Cubes - cheap and they love crunching them.

Give them a raw carrot a day. A nice, sweet treat, that cleans their teeth & does not fatten them.

GreyGhost 23rd June 2008 20:52

Time to show him who is the boss perhaps? A sharp rap on the nose may be necessary, may just be the kindest option. His mother would certainly not hesitate to growl and snap to show her displeasure.

Just my opinion as a non pet owner. Dons flame suit and looks for somewhere to hide.

Actually GG, you're not far off. A mother would sort out a rowdy pup with a swift nip usually to the scruff of the neck area, then push them away and ignore them. So while I wouldn't advise any kind of rap on the nose, you could try growling at them and pushing them away and ignoring them til they realise that nipping means getting ignored. Obviously this all has to be done instantly and consistently so the pup gets the message.

lady zed 9th July 2008 21:07

I got a cat!!!!

A gorgeous greyish short haired tomcat, about 5 years old, and just lovely! I've got bloomin mice, had them before and no doubt will gte them again. The whole area seems to suffer, old houses in a suburb surrounded by countryside, prime location for mice.

So anyway, I thought enough is enough, a cat is required. So we went to a cat rescue place last night and found him, don't know how long he'd been stray but he's in good condition and a good weight so more than likely someone is missing him, awww, but he don't care. He's spent most of his time in my son's bedroom only really coming down to eat and use his litter tray. He's a bit suspicious of the dog but there's been no fur flying and nothing vicious, so far! I'm really proud of her, she's behaved very well, I think she wants to play with him, but, well, he's a cat. You ca tell he's thinking 'nice place, quite happy here........apart from that stupid dog'.

Anyway, he's not the best looking but it was temperament I was more concerned about and he's been great with Lewis and as I said he tolerates the dog. And it's only been 24 hours so I guess with time they'll become friends.

We've named him Bing, after Bing Crosby. My Dad was Bing's biggest fan, met him 3 times (as did I although I can't remember) and had the biggest collection of Bing records in Britain at one point. I suspect the collection is still the biggest and pristine. He would buy a record, 78, 33 whatever, record it onto tape staright away and the record would be put away never to be played again!

So, Bing the cat. Hope his mice hunting skills are good!

Hi Anna,
I've always had cats going back over forty years now. SWMBO and I had five at one stage! We are now down to one (Rosie). Photo of her at the end of this thread

Hope you have fun with her. Post a photo.

I guess with a name like Bing that would be a him...

We drew the line after my son got a four foot corn snake, which went missing in the house for three days once. We were never quite sure who was going to eat who!

The first cat we had in our family was from a farm. Nasty, vicious, hissing and spitting little beast who grew up into an even nastier piece of work. The mice emigrated within a week of him arriving. Even at just a few weeks old he was catching and eating them. Told you he wasn't nice.

The day he died I was gutted.

Sound similar to the last cat we had, except add bad attitude. Ours hated me, it used to sit in the middle of the driveway every day at round 5.30 when I came home from work and look at me as if to say "go on I dare you". If it could I am certain it would have stuck a finger up at me.

Got a little white Staffordshire know and she loves me.

Our 3 year old springer spaniel has just cost me £100 at the vets `cause she keeps scratching! Seems like she may have picked some mites up when rummaging in the bushes trying to sniff after the foxes! £22 consultation fee, ****** commedians!

Phil 31st July 2008 21:56

Oscar is nearly 5 months now. He is an absolute loon. I'm not sure what to make of this, however. When I'm upstairs, swmbo downstairs, he's happily cuddled up. I walk down, his head pricks up and his tail starts to twitch. Then he goes mad, running around jumping about. He is quite happy to charge around with me playing, and when we are out for a walk and a bigger dog runs up to him, I'm the first one he'll run to for safety. But if I sit down and call him for a cuddle I get bitten and scratched?? I go away again and he falls asleep. I walk in again and loony dog mode is engaged??!! What am I doing wrong?

superporky 10th August 2008 13:39

I bought one of those mattresses that moulds itself to your body`s contours. It`s now in the shape of a fat springer spaniel!!

Broke my heart to have to let her go but now she has taken up permanent residence next to the pond. A fabulous friend who will be much missed.

I was having a clear out of an external hard drive and came across a couple of small videos i shot of our two cats when they were kittens, its from three years ago and to see them now all they want to do is sleep.
They are not kittens long and it reminded me how adventurous and funny they were in their big new world.

Oscar is 1 next month, for as long as I've been taking him for walks, he has been a little NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-. Without exagerating, I'm sure he could pull a small car. After every walk, my back and sides ache and where he is so eager to walk faster he sort of hops, coughing. I have him in a harness so he hopefully doesn't strangle himself with a normal lead. I've tried a halti(?) and that is a serious no no. He goes absolutely beserk and will end up hurting himself so that is no longer used.
Around the house he is the most gentle creature you could imagine but as soon as he steps outside the front door on the lead he goes wild with excitement, which is nice I suppose, but it would be nice if my arm could remain in its socket!! Any tips??

English Springer Spaniel so not a big dog. He has more strength than our Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

Phil 16th March 2009 20:06

Oscar is now on adult food. He was on Eukanuba puppy and since putting him on Eukanuba next one up from puppy, he has started doing something very eyebrows raised. Eating his own...

Any suggestions? I have heard that putting pineapple chunks on his food will sort it out?

Frogs...

Albino African Clawed Frogs to be specific. They live underwater, only coming to the surface for a quick gasp of air, than back underwater again.

Live up to 15 years.

Funny to watch, especially when eating!

The big one is about 5" nose to back legs, and the baby ones are about the size of a thumbnail, but growing nicely. We've got 7 of them, in 3 tanks. When they've all grown to the same size, then they'll all be in the same tank.

They eat blood worms, and anything else they can fit in their mouths!

The biggest eating...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMdvqGFVUms

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...Picture015.jpg

That purple lump is blood worms - it's about the size of a sugar cube.

Anyway, she's absolutely gorgeous. Her name's Corrie and she's an Oriental Lilac Tortie. She's the most affectionate wee thing we've ever seen. Not everybody's cup of tea (and TBH I never really thought much of Orientals before) but she's definitely a character!

She had a wee cyst thing on her back that I had removed at the same time. The vet said not to worry about her being able to reach it and claw it. Aye right. This is the dog that can get through the cat flap with sheer determination!

My dog Benji, who passed away about 10 years ago. He was a rescue dog - apparently he'd been chained up outside on a farm for a long time, and when rescued his coat was all matted together. We didn't know how old he was... he had cataracts, arthritis, and a leaking heart valve, which meant he was on daily medication. His teeth were mostly broken from a habit he had of chewing rocks! But he was the loveliest, friendliest dog you can imagine. And as lively as a puppy! Everyone who met him just fell in love, when walking him people would always ask me about him, as he was just so endearing.

I miss him loads...

Help!!

My dog is driving me mad. When we are at home, he is the laziest, most relaxed, quiet, gentle and chilled out dog going. However, when I walk him he is the biggest, most disobedient dog you could ever wish to imagine.
Jackie cannot walk him at all. She weighs about 7 1/2 stone. Whilst it is very funny to watch her sprinting down the road trying to stop herself from falling over.
I have to walk him because, well someone has to. He pulls so much he starts coughing, people then start staring thinking I'm doing someone horrible to him.
I have pains in my lower body and sides from walking him. It is very unpleasant indeed.
I had Rhodesian Ridgebacks in the past when living with Mother. They are very easy to walk and didn't pull at all.
Oscar is a Springer Spaniel, about half the size of a Rhodesian Ridgeback but has some real pull.

What can I do? I have tried Halti's but they were dangerous. He just went completely mad. I've tried all the stuff on the training videos to no avail.

Try getting a "Gentle Leader" (This might be the Halti you refer to in which case if you dont like it forget it.) Its like a harness for the dogs head and the lead attaches to the side. When the dog pulls his head will be pulled around towards you and he should soon get the idea that pulling gets him nowhere fast.
Or.. use a long lead and put a large loop of it in your hand. When he pulls drop the loop then turn around and say "This way" and walk back the way you came and keep repeating. He'll soon learn that if he pulls he again gets nowhere and his adventure is over. This works really quickly. Results in a couple of hours if you have the patience. You may look a bit daft tho'.

Thank you very much.
He certainly is a very handsome lad.

They love to bite when they are that age don't they!
I was reading my old posts and forgot about the biting.

He has grown into a very loving and gentle dog.
He took our rescued greyhound under his wing and has really rubbed off on him too.

Thanks for sharing your pics. Beautiful dogs you have.

Thanks Phil - have looked out some better pic’s 😀

He really has grown into an incredibly loving, clever, gentle dog.
Our rescued/retired Greyhound, Bertie worships him!:}

Bertie the Greyhound was the most anxiety filled animal I've ever met. Really hard work but Oscar gave him confidence and helped him adapt and realise he didn't need to be scared any more.
Here's Bertie, been with us for nearly six years.

Really good to catch up on this thread and see your (and everyone else's) dogs again Phil - and also to read back over my posts and see how things have changed with us

Pleased to report that our young 'uns, although now old 'uns, are still going strong (fingers crossed!). Charlie is 11 now and Maddy is 10, and despite Charlie being a little bit arthritic, which doesn't slow her down much, they are still very active

When this thread began, I was still happily working as a manager in the NHS, which then became unhappily, and Gill was happy then unhappy working at the local council. About 5 years ago I was made redundant, and whilst walking our dogs, met a lady who boards dogs and does daycare. The idea seemed great to us, and I dipped my toes into the water. Soon we became quite busy, and then Gill packed in her job, and since then, we have become very busy! We now have a client list with 159 dogs on, of which 85 are regulars!

Looking at your latest post made me chuckle as last week we had a Springer that looked exactly like your Oscar, who is called Bertie! And currently we are boarding a greyhound that looks exactly like your Bertie, called Linford! What's the chances? (BTW, we have two Berties and two Oscars on the books!)

My old 16 year old Toller gave us a scare last night - he did the splits on a slippery floor a few days back and has been very stiff and sore.

This morning he could not get up and had wet his bed.

Vet said he is fine just sore - bloods are fine too - just slightly elevated urea but for 16 year old dog they reckon he is doing pretty well.

He is weeing and pooing fine now - he is on pain killers now as he has a very stiff pelvis and hips.

At 16 we know where this is going - but not just yet I pray.

stevestrat 9th May 2018 15:37

I'd imagine if you did the splits you'd be stiff and on painkillers as well.

16 is a fair age but our Milka (Toy Poodle) was over 18 when he left us.

Our Poppy is becoming a problem child, twice in last 4 days met neighbour and his dog on our walk. She picked up the dogs ball and ran away with it,couldn't run after her so walked quickly:D Got back to the house to find her sitting on doorstep with ball under paws. I am sure she was laughing.
Last evening she had a wild 15 mins, ripped her bed to shreads, jumped up on sofa and nipping the wifes' fingers. Might have to book a pet psychoanalysis appointment.:D

my wife has recounted a similar story to me but I've never really believed it until today.

Our cat was sitting on a bar stool in the kitchen meowing. She had been fed but still meowed. I gave her a stroke and she stopped. No sooner had I stopped she meowed.

This is what I had never believed.
I got the cats brush and stood in the conservatory, showed it to her and said "come on then". The cat jumped off the barstool and came into the conservatory, I went outside onto the grass and she followed. I started to bush her and then spent 5-10 minutes bushing. The amount of fur that came away was amazing, thought she was going to go bold. I stopped at one point but she looked at me asking for more. She loved it.

my wife says if she shows the cat the brush the cat will come to her and lay down to be brushed.
