Facelift Grille Badge - obscure question
 

Hello all, a slightly obscure question!

I’ve just had a new OE grille badge delivered as the old one has bubbled up. I”ve noticed that the old one’s edges are medium grey, whereas the new one’s are black. The Rover typeface is a bit different too. I know the old badge is original as I’ve owned the car from new. Does anyone know where I could get an authentic badge with the grey background or its part number, please. The car was built in late 2004, 1.8 Conny SE spec.

The ones from Rimmer are described as 'Genuine' and have a black background. The outer edges are 'chrome'.

I changed my Facelift Style Grille Badge for the Original Style Badge - I think it looks much better :cool:

First time I have noticed the background is grey! Maybe it’s faded, but if so the fading is very uniform. I think the next step is to order a badge from Rimmers.

I must be being stupid here, but… isn't the facelift grille completely different from the older (better quality) style? On my facelift model, the “badge” is just a kind of cheap and nasty sticker in a depression on the grille, so to replace it you're supposed to change the whole grille …


When mine faded away to nothing some years ago, not realising there was a difference, I ordered an earlier badge, then of course discovered there was no way of attaching it.


I decided it would look OK if I just glued it over the depression where the existing badge is, and it’s been fine for many years, but now the finish has completely gone on it too.

The old decal can be easily removed by applying a low heat (hair dryer on 'high' or electric heat gun on 'low') and just peeling off when heated through (be careful not to blister the 'chrome' grill surround). I obtained a new decal off Jezzer on here - it was ever so slightly oversize for the recess so the edges needed a bit of fettling with a file to obtain a snug fit.
Make sure any small remnants of the old adhesive are completely removed (apply with a cloth - I used a quick once over with cellulose thinners and then a little electrical contact cleaner) and just carefully centralise and apply the new self adhesive decal applying pressure outwards from the centre to the edges - 100% improvement...
I think 3 light sprayed coats of clear semi-matt acrylic varnish will give it a few more years of life to the new badge - they fade because water gets under the substrate via the exposed edges and any small chips from road debris etc., the varnish gives it that little bit more protection.

I had a similar issue on my facelift 75 last year - the original badge started to corrode and that just won't do will it.

Annoyingly, it had been fine until I started applying carnauba wax to it to protect it!

Anyway, I sourced a new 'original' part from Rimmer Bros but aside from it looking ever so slightly different, it also didn't fit properly!

It was slightly too large in certain areas to fit neatly inside the recess on the grill so needed some very gentle filing down to fit properly.

Thought that was odd given it was supposed to be an original MG Rover part.

It's possible to buy a facelift grille complete with badge. Looking at photos on eBay etc. of new ones for sale the badge background is dark grey, though confusingly the Rimmers complete grille assembly picture shows a black badge background. Makes me wonder if the separate badges were produced as a different batch for the final model year. Shame the badge is so flimsy but I expect that's down to Project Drive economies.
