Do you practice "Dutch reach"?
No I'd never heard of it either but apparently there's a new Highway Code out that says that car driver's opening their doors "Should open car doors using the “Dutch reach” method, with the hand on the opposite side to the door they are opening. This makes drivers turn their heads to look over their shoulders and reduces the likelihood of “dooring” a passing cyclist."
Sounds sensible to me - as an ex racing (but slow) cyclist - but don't know how the Dutch got involved except for the obvious clue that Holland has more cyclists per sq pothole than us. To ignore the H Code could be a criminal offence, so let's Go Dutch chaps. |
Heard of it but don't use it unless very windy and the wind may catch the door and it fly open.
Will it be law or a recommendation or a suggestion? A bit confusing, some say January 2022 but I found this https://www.dsabooks.co.uk/product_i...roducts_id=279 macafee2 |
A "Dutch Reach" . . . . sounds like a position that features in one of those DVDs that arrives in a plain brown wrapper :D

I usually wait until the cyclist is in striking range before opening the door

I only learned of this a couple of weeks ago by chance. It may become a well known phrase here as well in the not too distant future the way things are going. Get yer bike clips ready. :icon_lol: https://imgur.com/a/R2LRKBN

Another thing for me to not worry about.--:icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:

I thought that was why door mirrors were fitted so you could see behind, anyway never heard or read of that position in the Kama Sutra!!. Rev. |

Part of a whole bunch of changes to the Highway Code. Probably wont matter unless you're involved in an accident and then it means its your fault.
Think it can lead to a max penalty of 14 years (death by dangerous driving) in a worst case scenario. The one that worries me most is the one that says you cant turn across a cyclist. Sounds sensible at first but - say I've st my local traffic lights indicating to turn left and a cyclist runs down the cycle lane on the inside then the lights turn green as they arrive on my rear quarter. The choices are now that they pass me on the inside bravely ignoring that I'm signalling left or that they leave the cycle lane and overtake me on the right. If they do neither I (and they) are stuck there as I am forbidden to turn across them. They effectively have right of way in the presumption I have seen them in my mirrors and I will be at fault if there is an accident. They will not be at fault even though I was in front and signalling. As a cyclist, I'm not sure I'd want to do anything so would rather hope the driver wasn't up to date on the latest rules and just got on with it. |
