Radiator Crumble
Time for a new Radiator and Intercooler?
Whilst accessing the Bonnet Locks on one of my diesel 75’s today I noticed that a lot of the Radiator and Intercooler mesh folds had more or less disintegrated and turned to dust or shattered pieces. Where once there was a free flow of air across/through the vanes , now there is general clogging due to the blockage by all this stuff. For various reasons I suspect this car lived quite a while near the sea eg there was far too much rust on the Slam Panel ( which have removed and rigorously treated/repainted ). The car was certainly purchased from a garage in Portsmouth – seaside. Anyway , my reading of the condition is that I think the ‘cooling’ ability of both Radiator and Intercooler must be severely limited .I wonder whether anyone else has found a Radiator in such a state or also would agree that salt corrosion is the most likely cause?. Observations also welcome as regards my view that a full replacement is sensible. I was thinking of a DMGRS Radiator but not sure where for a reliable Intercooler ? This is a 2002 75 Diesel car , excellent White Gold bodywork inside/out and has only done 82K miles. Had all underbody and Sills corrosion proofed a few years ago. Worth bringing up to full spec – so don’t my a spend on it. All the best. |
Yes Roger, I'd say that your observations, analysis and conclusion are spot-on.

I think you are referring to the condenser at the front along with the intercooler, the radiator is behind both of those and is usually perfectly ok, i don't think the intercoolers are about now brand new ? condensers are. https://i.imgur.com/6xf5Wscl.jpg1 https://i.imgur.com/pDWEMNel.jpg2 |
Had to replace my condenser recently https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5f474a2e69.jpg

I replaced the condenser on the 2.5 v6 two years ago. I will be puttingthediesel on the road in June, after two years on sorn. I will be inspecting everything to see what needs doing before then. I had noticed that with the V6, I was getting fine shiny dust particles on top of the engine cover whenever I lifted the bonnet. This was as a result of the fins breaking down to dust on the condenser, I presume. So if you have fine dust, shiny, on your engine cover, it is time for a new condenser.

Great chaps
As usual , excellent help / observations that are really welcome and a big thanks to all . I believe the common term for the problem is ‘Fin Rot’ and Salt from the road or Sea air seems the culprit.
Arctic was right - it is indeed my condenser (rather than radiator – your photos most useful Steve) and the intercooler that are badly hit . Photo from Suzublu certainly confirms this. I note that Rimmers have a ‘Genuine’ MG intercooler for £336 but an ‘Aftermarket’ one for £210 . I am tempted by the latter – any views on ‘Aftermarket’ quality are welcome before I get the orders under way ? All the best. |

This is a bit cheaper not much, all alloy no plastic pipe or end tanks so you would think it's stronger :} |
