calipers

does anyone know if the front brake calipers on the rover 75 1.8 2.0 and kv6 2.0 and 2.5 and diesel 2.0 are all the same part. 871 left and 872 right are stamped on them but I was wondering if they are interchangeable and the same part with only the 180 and 190 and v8 calipers being different ? regards.

left and right are not interchangeable (am not sure if that is what you meant in the text).

Fronts are the same throughout the range except the ones you mentioned. Just be wary of those that have been upgraded to the 190 type up front.

Likewise with the rears, earlier cars as well as the 180/190 (NOT V8 - they used completely different rear calipers and discs) had vented discs, but the solid disc variants were the same.

Do you mean the rear calipers for vented discs are the same as the rear calipers for solid discs? Surely that can't be right - the vented disc must be thicker than the solid disc. Or have I misread your meaning?

From https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID001572

Item 1 carrier - two shown: one for solid, one for vented
Item 2 caliper assy - two shown: one for vented RH, one for vented LH (none shown for solid)
Illustrated Items Not Listed Are Currently Not Available

the variants [of cars] with solid discs are interchangeable. As some earlier non 180/190 cars had vented discs on the rears, I felt it prudent to mention them, even though the op referred only to fronts (I obtained a set of four when I was upgrading my brakes).

Yes vented discs would require wider calipers. The wider calipers are not interchangeable (safely) with non vented discs, however they can be used on solid disc type caliper carriers (I have read).

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification. :}

Btw, did you paint your new calipers? I'm thinking of doing mine but not sure on the best choice of paint.

Yes. I painted mine after sand blasting and refurbishing them. However, I would investigate costs first. Buying new was not that much more expensive (excluding paint).

Paint came from a local company. (Ebay seller fiona McGowan, search for clipper paint. I cannot get links on the phone). The paint has held up extremely well.

I used blue Hammerite:cool::D
You can powdercoat them as well if you strip all the seals etc off.

Yes, I've just been looking at these (courtesy of Suzublu) but they're for vented discs, so no good for me.

Powdercoat sounds expensive but it might be the hardest wearing option.

There are standard ones available. Search for the Ebay seller. brakes int . After a mishap with one of my 190 ones, I just replaced the complete caliper. They have new ate marked ones. It wasnt worth the hassle of getting a single one. (They have rears also).

My rears came from a retiring trader, before I realised they could be had new. I probably would have bought new, but as I had plenty of time to do it, as well as never having done it before, I am happy enough to have done it myself. May have saved just 5-10 each on the rears, but learned how to do it.

Am not sure I would powder coat them, as any chipping on the coating could allow moisture below the surface causing the coating to split and look bad over time. After all paint or coating is just an aesthetic exercise. With paint it is easier to touch up.
