Badly fitting Air Filter
 

I recently fitted a new air filter I got from Europart, it did not fit at all well, I had to shave bits of rubber off to install it and it wasn't tapered so the cover was difficult to get back on.

I think I would be wise to change it again, can anyone please recommend a brand that will be an easy & reliable fit that I can preferably order online.

Have you spoken to the suppliers about the bad fit ??

The one I got from them some time ago was no problem.

Did they send the correct one though I think the filter is unique to the R75 ?

No I didn't, that was a mistake, I thought it would be less trouble to make it do rather than go back to the shop.

Was the one supplied by ECP Crosland by any chance?


Anyway forget that, the original manufacturers were either Mahle in Austria or Mann & Hummel in Germany.


So if you want to definitely have a decent quality original filter at a reasonable price, choose either

I fitted a genuine LR filter to my car at last service as I bought three new old stock Freelander 1 TD4 versions from Stratstone LR at Lemington at a reasonable price.


You pay your money and take your chances with filters, I will only fit decent quality filters to my car(s) and while some filters such as Wix, TJ, Crosland etc may look the part, they are not a patch on the real thing ;)

No Jon, it is the same filter for the Freelander TD4, and quite a few BMW models as well, see the link in my post above.

I use one of these in mine. No problem will fitting, works really well and is washable so no need to ever replace again

Thank you for those two links. My filter needs to changed about now.---The first link is best for me.--There is a great difference too. One filter is about half the price of the other with delivery included.

First link is a Wix filter Steve, the second a Mann & Hummel, the third link has a cheap type oil filter so probably unbranded.


I didn't include any of the Bosch branded filters in my original answer to Mike, as I tend only to use filters made by Rover's original suppliers, ie for oil filter M&H HU718/1z, Knecht KC85/1 fuel filter, etc.


The practice of Xpart sourcing the cheapest parts possible, then rebranding as genuine MGR products and reselling at premium prices is one that should be resisted when buying run of the mill service items.


Gone are the days when you could rely on one brand being much superior, such as Unipart when they were Rover Recommended, and the cheapest tat entering the market, and used by people as they are unaware of the long term damage caused.


A previous post linked to a washable air filter, these are made of layered open cell foam product which must be treated with an oil based product sprayed on from the inside out post washing.


There is a classic example of how ignorance of how the intake system is configured, and the long term problems caused by depositing light base mineral oils on the platinum hotwire of the MAF sensor.


These are all well documented, but a lot of people don't bother to find out, simply listening to pub talk.


My own car has over 200k under it's belt, and on the original MAF sensor which was proven recently to be perfectly in spec, despite the symptoms which turned out to be EGR related, saying otherwise.


You pay your money and take your chances, I would not hesitate to return items, such as I did recently with Rimmer Bros that turned out to be not fit for purpose, despite the claims of genuine MGR parts, which of course they were not.


This is a case of the successive owners of Xpart, downsizing and running on increasingly narrow margins, from Caterpillar Logistics, through to the current owners Leacy Classics, whom it would appear are completely out of their depth.


What is the answer? I don't really know, but in the case of the original poster I would be tempted to return the filter to ECP as not fit for purpose as soon as his replacement is fitted, only if rubbish rejected, can we expect to find better quality in it's place.
