Any users of a OBD reader/display?
I want a simple way of measuring my engine temperature, oil pressure and voltage while I'm driving. I am not keen on cutting away at any facias, and less keen on splicing into any bus lines!
I have seen these display units you can plug in to the OBD plug under the steering wheel, and they look good. Multiple displays, and easily mounted to the dash. My concerns are. Is it ok to have something permanently plugged into the OBD port while using the car? Is there any risk of the units altering/overwriting any settings on my cars ECU? Is it possible to turn them off each time, or would I have to unplug it each time? Anyone have any experience with these items on eBay or Amazon. |
Iirc an ELM 327? sends Bluetooth info to the torque app on a mobile phone. All of the information you need. Or run the obd on the dash.

I don't have a smart phone, and don't like having to keep going into the trip OBD (19 then 7), I want one that I can plug into the port on the car, and leave fixed to the dash, like an extra display unit.
There are loads about, just wanting to know if anyone has used one and can they cause issues when left in permanently. |
I have two and both stay on without the ignition key in. They do have leads that plug into the device so you could unplug the unit from the lead rather than remove the plug from the car if that makes sense.
Saying that the amount of drain on the electrical system is probably tiny so as long as the car is used frequently it should not be a problem. |
There's a cheap unit that plugs into the cigar socket that gives you an output for charging phones etc. and also has a voltage output display.--:D--Quite small and inconspicuous.--;)

Why don't you buy something like this and use it just as a display

X gauge I have one fitted permanently on my transit for years, displays, engine temp, speed, rpm etc. but I have never tried it on the rover.

Android phone with Torque and an Elm Bluetooth adaptor, no problems and works great.
