It is a dead cooling fan.

Facelift 2004 diesel 64k miles. Car has all original equipment. The cooling fan won't run at all, tried demist test and also pushed the aircon button....nothing. I've read a few things but not really understood them, electrics not my forte. Most likely problem and fix please, and please keep it simple.
Cheers
Heddy.

Being a facelift it should have a silver resistor visible at around 2 oclock on the fan.

If this has gone it should just be a matter of fitting a gold resistor.

If it hasn't got a resistor then its the old 3 speed fan where the bushes have gone. Either replace them or refit a 2 speed fan with resistor.

Thanks Stuart, I was thinking this may be the case. It does have a resistor fitted at 2 o' clock. It may have been silver when new but looks black now. Is this fix consistent with the symptoms? It may be the way to go anyway, I'm ok with the bumper removal, and I'm sure the wiring is relatively simple.

A failed resistor will kill the slow speed fan but doesn't affect the high speed. When you tried demist and A/C how long did you leave it? Usually the high speed fan will start to cycle on/off every 20-30 seconds or so.

Replacing the resistor couldn't be simpler. Undo the screws holding it on and cut the wires, the resistors usually come with connectors (the one Stuart linked to does), use them to wire in the replacement.

Tried both tests for over a minute, is the resistor still the prime suspect?

Undoubtedly. the resistor should be replaced if the Demist test doesn't trip it immediately. In fact replace it anyway. You may also need to get the aircon serviced if the high speed doesn't pulse on and off after a minute or two.

Petrol models I'm ok with but the diesels have a different fan control system. Have a read at this, might help.

I know this problem has been well documented but thanks for all the brilliant replies. I'll fit the resistor and see what happens, thanks chaps :}

make sure you use heat shrink on the joints others wise you could get water damage later on once fitted.
