What spec for rear springs?
 

Could anyone help me please ref deciding what rear springs I should have. Car is 75 saloon 2.5 Connoisseur SE of 2000 vintage. The car has a few "issues" which I'm uncovering, one of which is a broken rear spring. (And an interior resembling an Olympic swimming pool, but I'm close to resolving that one).

I've taken the rear squab out and there is no sign of the label that's supposed to be there. Also no sign of paint markings on the springs themselves, which are very rusty. Incidentally, the front springs are in much better condition and I couldn't see paint markings there either. Luckily the dampers are original at the front and had labels on showing the code.

Is there anywhere else on the car I could look to conclusively establish what springs should be fitted please or any helpful database you know of?

Actually, unless I'm missing something, (and as a newbie on these cars it's very possible!), it's not as clear cut as I thought. I can see I need "G" dampers but as for springs I need either the CI code, or the paint bands from the springs; neither of which I have. Is there another way to establish which of the 12 types of springs go with the vehicle I have?

Cut and paste from some years ago - would have thought of this site - so according to this a 2.5 v6 75 shold have red springs. As to the squab - i looked for my label twice with no luck - 3rd time a garage looked and they found it :shrug:

When looking for the label under the rear seat cushion, I believe you have to lift the insulation as the label is underneath, apparently to the left side of the car.

Thanks for the quick responses and for the spring info. That certainly gives me enough to order red and I'll just do a check of coils and thickness etc to see if they compare.
I've just been out again staring at the car like a mad thing thinking I can't see the label for looking, but it definitely isn't there. The car is completely stripped, including the insulation, thanks to the water. I've even checked the insulation itself. Weird, but thanks all for your help to get me moving forwards again.

This is just my opinion.

Save yourself some money. rear springs for the saloon have almost no difference whatsoever. Think about it, petrol and diesel all have the same running gear and suspension parts at the rear. This is from the 1.8 petrol 2.0 and 2.5v6 to the 2.0 diesel.

The rear of the shell is the same weight so in reality the rear spring is a rear spring, end of.
There is one difference that I know of, later cars did away with the anti roll bar so the springs were a little stronger but not so you and I would notice perhaps a little less roll if you also have the ARB fitted and if they take a miniscule share on the minimal extra weight of a diesel lump from the front end then it's there to be used .
When I did my rear end rebuild 18 month ago on my 2.5 V6 I took advice from a very senior trader/member on here and purchased these OEM springs for a fraction of the cost of other OEM springs.
They are advertised as diesel springs but as I say, the advice I had is from a technical guru.

The choice is yours but all I can tell you is my 2.5v6 launch car sits perfect and rides as it should.

I'm with Stocktake on this subject, I have had 1.8 lowering springs on my diesel for over 8 yrs now and never had an issue.

I have also fitted countless 'motor shop' springs to the rears of our cars and can hardly tell the difference between a genuine spring and one from a generic supplier.

I asked about this recently but didn't get any meaningful replies. If a seller (any seller) says a spring or damper fits a 75 or a variation (1.8/2.0/2.5/diesel whatever), who's gonna say it won't? :shrug:
