So after what has so far been a very expensive month, currently up to around £1100 on the car at the moment, and not even gone in for the mot yet!

However after getting the car back from the garage that did the clutch, he advised that the gear linkage cables need changing very soon, and he thought they were around £75.

Has anyone any experience of any of these, are any of them ones to especially avoid or are the cheap ones ok?

Sounds like an awkward job, but not sure I can afford to send it to a garage again, its wiped me out the last few months. In fact I wish I hadn't totted it up in my head while making this post, this years total stands at over £1500...

Why do the garage think the cables need replacing?

Because they can get damaged when removing the gearbox ... I had exactly the same advice when my clutch was replaced earlier this year and ended up broken down in the contraflow in the M6 roadworks.

Took me about 2 hours on the drive to change them, hardest part was removing the gear knob that a previous owner had glued on.

Car has been perfect ever since.

Nice way of looking at it, but I know of at least 2 other things coming up very soon...

Without having seen it I can’t really say, I’d assume that they consider them worn to point of needing replacing. If they are damaged, I’ve no idea of if they damaged them, or the person who did the clutch years ago, damaged them and the they’ve worn.

Thanks, I’ll get a pair ordered. The garage said something about having to drop the exhaust a bit to get access to the gear stick end of the cables. Did you have to do that? The gearknob will be tricky, it pulled off when I put it in reverse years ago, so was packed out with a bit of paper and it’s not on there solid...

You might have the wrong knob fitted Derrick :eek:
I know one doesnt fit the other properly.

When I had my clutch changed on the derv Chris said I should think about replacing the cables as the joints were quite worn.

Do you mean the cables themselves or the cable ends where they connect to the gearbox? I've found them to be easily disconnected and reconnected without damage when replacing the clutch, but I suppose anything can get damaged depending on how you go about it. :}

The cable ends.. I didn't have a problem, but the mechanic who did my clutch obviously did as both ends were broken on the gearbox end.

I bought some of these a couple of years back. I cannot remember how I confirmed their suitability, apart from fitting them and it worked.
