No wonder the reversing sensors weren't working!

I'm pretty sure the reason is that the wiring harness has been removed!

I bought this car (2002 ZT T KV6) only a couple of months ago, knowing that the reversing sensors weren't working. On finding that none of the sensors were working, I swapped out the ECU but to no avail. Finally, I decided the rear bumper would have to come off but the 5 screws under the tread plate were really, really stiff. So to try and see what was going on, I poked a dentist's mirror through the slots and strange, I couldn't see any wiring. Looking underneath I found a socket "to nowhere" !
So given how rusted-in the screws were, this act of vandalism must have taken place several years/owners ago. Why would someone do this to a nice road-going car??

PS How do you attach pictures?

pps Anybody know the correct loom part number please?

Hey there,

I just put a new bumper on my car and have a spare loom from the old one that you can have if you like.

My car is a 2004 facelifted tourer - maybe someone can confirm if the facelift and non-facelift looms are the same?

I'm happy to post it to you if you need it.

Cheers,

Simon R.

....but now they are!

Thanks to my new best friend - Tourist, the reversing sensors are now working.
As a precaution, I did a continuity check on the loom he sent me and all ok.
"Acting on information received" I was able to remove the rear bumper and fit the missing loom. I also sprayed the ECU to loom socket with switch cleaner as it had been exposed to the elements under the car.
However on hooking everything up again - no joy.
So off with the bumper again (only took 10 mins this time) to remove all the wiring ECU to sensors. Onthe way I struggled to discover how to remove the rear floor mounted tie-down point, eventually spotting the blanking plate which hid two fixing screws. This allowed the trim to be lifted to remove the wiring. Anyway, I eventually found that the root cause of the problem was corrosion inside the ECU cable to loom socket. I have a small ultrasonic cleaner so I cleaned the socket in this in hot white wine vinegar.
Job done ! yes!

PS to aid continuity testing, the black core of the white ECU connector can be prised out to identify which wire goes to which pin-hole

Glad you got it sorted Malc!

Ironically, whilst on holiday last week my parking sensors started to misbehave - I know that three of the four that came off my car's original bumper were working properly so I just have to get the new bumper off and substitute them until they start working again.

I'm almost as good at taking the rear bumper off as the front.... Ah well.

Happy motoring :-)
