Overheating
Following some spirited motorway driving (M3 to Southampton) to have a look at a Lexus RH 450h I couldn't park easily at Lexus Hedge End. Had to reverse for a little way (about a minute's worth) to find a turning point. During which - HORROR! - the temperature gauge hit red. Turned around the car promptly, gauge dropped to normal, then up to red, continued doing this alternately until I found a parking place. Fortunately was Eastleigh Council's MoT station, helpfully let me use their lavatory and water refill.
Bonnet up, can't see any evidence of leaks, slowly in stages release radiator cap, plenty of coolant comes out under pressure, wait to cool, refill with water, drive home 45 miles, no sign of over-heating. Fan running ok when I parked; however, don't recall hearing it at Southampton - maybe because I was in panic mode(?). Getting a local garage to have a look tomorrow, any ideas or advice? |
I had a problem with the V8 overheating 10 years back. Pottering around showing off Cornwall to relatives, the car just started running roughly and then cut out. To my horror, I then realised there was steam coming from the engine:eek:. Pushed the beast into the kerb and had a meal while the engine cooled off. The restaurant donated water with a container and when I got back to the car, cap off, and all that water taken. Had to make another trip for more water until full. Must have lost more than a gallon. Very nervously expecting potential major issues, I fired her up. Car then started normally and I noticed that it was losing a little water on short trips. No obvious leaks, but following forum advice I bought a new radiator cap. The car hasn't lost water since ( touch wood and whistle ):getmecoat:

Assuming your fan is working ok - it sounds that it is - and your expansion cap o rings are fine i would be considering a failed thermostat or leaking coolant hose/ leaking radiator.

What you hear is probably just the low speed on the 2-speed fan. |

David,
Reading your account the first thing to do, before reaching for your credit card, is to check that your radiator fan is working on both speeds using the "demist test". Simon |

Just wondered how you check both fan speeds are working on a V8 using the demist test???? Dave |
I Dont wish to be the doom monger, but the V8 has been known to let go of a headgasket!
