It's a 19 year old sub £600 car, it's not going to fly through a proper MOT. The sheets not as bad as it looks, many cars will be on rotten rear suspension arms. Front arms average £80, you take a risk on quality. Rear arms about £118 each cheapest, makes sense to do both. The brake pipes need proper coat of looking at, they may be ok, but would look at replacement in future, not an expensive job or parts wise. I was being harsh about slave, I'm just bitter from my own experience with diesels, yours is 1.8 auto so get the rear arms done and the future is bright, it's a cracking colour and Dawn's already sank a fair bit of money into it.

Your probably right on most of the items, but Rovers poor rust proofing flaking off mild steel rear suspension arms makes me think that at 19 years of our wet winters and diabolical road surfaces. The rear arms have probably had it, 80% of the ones I have looked at for sale cheap recently have had dubious rear arms.

Having been all over Bones, I would agree with you Howard, I didn't spot any of those mentioned issues.

And only if you can find good ones, remember there are substandard ones out there now.

an idle car will rust quicker than a moving one, especially in a shaded area.

I'm getting that impression too. I mean, a loose nut? What was wrong in just tightening it up and marking it down as an advisory?

But no, he fails the car on it and then expects me to pay 76 quid for him to fix it!

OMG! £76 for nut tightening! Taking the michael. She had a fab mot history until this. The thing is who do you trust these days? I want an mot to keep me safe but lately its hard to find garages that also use common sense and are fair :(

David.
How about trying this, go by what Andy is saying as he knows the car, wipe all the grease of the brake lines, tighten you the said nuts, get the wheel off and inspect the rear arm your self it maybe only surface rust if so scrap it off and treat it, if the arm is corroded to the effect it as holed then change it, sort out the spring.

Then if you think some garages are maybe looking for work then take it to a council mot place they only mot cars and do not do any work.

I grease my brake lines every year (after MOT) and wipe them clean prior to MOT. (They still have a slight greasy covering but I do use ACF50 Corrosion Block blue in colour);)
