Gearbox drain plug - washer?

I've just drained the gearbox oil (KV6 manual) and there's no washer on the T50 drain plug. Should there be one?

Same question goes for the T50 refill plug.

No washers mentioned in Rave and I can't even find the plugs on Rimmers diagrams (unless they're 12 & 15 here).

If you're not sure or can't find an answer then just fit one. It won't do any harm.--:}

Yes, I will.

The last person* to tighten this plug went a bit mad to compensate for the lack of a washer - I had to use a 300mm breaker bar to undo it!

(* ... who shall remain nameless, and no it wasn't me)

For info:

Torx T50 gearbox drain plug.
Thread diameter 17.65mm.
Flange diameter 22.61mm.
Machined face on box - diameter 26mm approx.

HI Simon.
I don't think they have a washer i do not like the drain or the level plugs used on our cars the Freelander 1 are better.

Why people overtighten plugs is beyond me. They hold nothing but themselves in position and at most, a bit of oil!

Possibly because the consequences of them coming undone could be dire?🤔
But, you are correct, it doesn't make it right.
Most people like to be sure to be sure.

I don't like them either Steve - using Torx for a plug this wide is a silly idea. XPart say it's a TRL100070 btw (drain & level).

As you say, the Freelander 1 TRL100060 plug is much better. Britcar shows a separate washer for it - TYF101060. Rimmers shows TRL100060 with a washer link (at least I think that's a washer).

That link you gave also shows the washer.

Personally I would always fit one. ( 65 years of doing up sump plugs and none have ever undone.--:D--)

Overtightening risks stripping the threads and the plug dropping out. I've recovered vehicles with missing plugs and stripped threads, usually with seized engines or axles!!!
