fix scrap or what to replace it with
 

My bottom ball joint let go on my rover 75 estate. just bought a new set of tires due to be fitted today!

I came off the motorway slowed to 30 to go round the bend lost all ability to steer and ended up on the verge luckily no one else or anything else involved.

damage is bottom wish bone wheel and probably disk bearing

the cil is badly dented but repairable if I was feeling keen.

trouble is its a 166k mile rover worth £500 before the mechanical failure.

feeling a bit discombobulated and very lucky as a few minutes before I was doing 70mph.

So the question is do I fix it or scrap car was driving really nicely just fitted new engine mounts and was a smooth as anything. I am worried that something else is damaged.

I am leaning towards buying another and swapping best bits over......anyone know of diesel estate tourer for sale near Oxford M40?

Fix it!! It won’t be a difficult job, pm Mickeyboy and get the full strut with an arm, a good body guy will have the sill repaired easily.

Yep scrap it, spend another £500 - £1000 on another old motor, buy more road tax, spend more on necessary maintenance and you’ll be on the road again! Alternatively as it sounds as if you’ve already sorted the car and enjoying it - get it fixed. Parts aren’t that expensive and if your doing the work yourself it’ll certainly be cheaper than getting another one. As for the mileage of 166k – these diesels if properly maintained are good for more than double that as many members will confirm. So all in all, whilst your hacked off with the latest failure unless the car is a real dog and you don’t want it anyway then fixing it is probably the cheaper and best route to go :}

well looking cars are available but all at least 2 hours away which means 2 trips 8 hours which is about how long it will take to fix the mechanical bits on the car....

To fix i need lower wish bones drop links and may as well fit new rear bushes.

Are the £107 sets on ebay with a 2 year warranty any good?

Brake disc seems to no longer run true so pair of discs

probably need a new hub? strut looks ok but...
and a wheel

I already have a new set of tyres which were due to be fitted

Half shaft has dropped its bearings so need one of them.

ABS cable has been damaged when possibly fixable
latch spring in hand brake ratchet seems to have got damaged somehow when we were loading the car on the transporter. although hand brake still works


Anyone have these Items for sale as a job lot?

FWIW, find yourself a local scrap yard for parts, if you are able to remove and fit parts yourself you are on to a winner

i bought a 75 dirt cheap that had the same sort of damage and couldnt be driven.
Went around to the guys place, jacked up the car on the damaged side, replaced the wishbone and re inserted the driveshaft and then drove it home.
pretty durable these cars!!

Well sadly the obvious parts and paint needed using mix of second hand and new parts like bushes wish bones comes to around £280 then I discovered the hand brake and alternator have got damaged somehow. Plus about 2-3 days work body and mechanical Which adds a bit more. My mechanic friend thinks subframe might be bent. So sadly the car is to be scrapped. On the positive I have now bought a replacement.................rover 75 tourer for a fairly cheap price it will need some parts swapping but has a lower millage.
It only has 1 key should I buy another or swap my 2 keys management system etc over from my CDT?

What difficult to get spare bits should I keep from my old car? I will keep some of the new bits like the engine mounts. Anyone need some 2002 tourer bits?

I was border line walking away from my new car but then spotted the power fold button...how geeky does that make me??
