Focusing
 

For 25 years years I had a trusty Yashica FR1, it was extremely reliable, sturdy and heavy. Eventually diagonal shading began to appear on the slides which pointed to shutter failure. I changed to a Fuji 6900Z on which the electonics failed after about 2000 shots, so that went. This time SWMBO agreed to let me have a Nikon D50 which was actually the first one viewed but I was so shocked that she said that I could have it, well.... you know what it's like.

It is a good camera and I am pleased with the results, but...

My sight is extremely poor and I can see precious little once I look through the viewfinder which causes quite a bit of trouble, particularly with focusing and getting the right speed/aperture combination for the subject. The Yashica had a split prism focusing system which I could see quite well, but I really can't see the focusing at all on the Nikon.

If anyone has any helpful hints which would not involve entering negotiations with SWMBO on the purchase of a new camera I would love to hear from you.

Obvious question I know but you have played around with the dioptric adjustment knob on your viewfinder to see if that helps?

I did, it didn't.

Really it was a daft post, I had come across the Yashica and got all nostalgic.

Congratulations on your ownership of an excellent camera, I have a D50 for when I want to travel light(ish) and am very pleased with it.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but there is a range of adjustment eyepieces available to correct eyesight beyond the limited range of the adjustment on the camera. Maybe one of these will help you.

If you struggle to obtain accessories locally you should get what you need and good service from Grays of Westminster.

Second that for Grays, I have a steam FM2n and have a flip up magnifier on the eyepiece as I do not get on with correctors, you may be able to adapt one Grays would know.Peter

Thanks for the replies again. The magnifier looks a good possibility. As far as I know the fittings for the D series Nikons are universal so anything should fit mine.
