Airbag Bolts
 

Came round this morning to do my steering wheel and the bolts that hold the airbag on have no head on them. They wear orginal T-30 but look to have rounded off to allen key sort of shape.

I have phone afew garages up and they want to take the whole colume out which I think is overkill for two bolts.

Anybody had this before or got a suggestion. I need to get it off as my indicator pings off half the time so needs greasing etc.

The "bolts" are in fact torx screws, number 10 I think, you can buy a set of torx keys in any tool shop. :)

I have the right tool for the job but some spanner mokey had done them up so tight that when I turned it once it stripped the splines off it.

So the inside bit now looks like a round circle with nothing to grip onto.

The only thing i can think of is a bit dodgy but if you maybe got a slightly bigger torx bit and lightly tapped it in with a hammer just so the torx bit grips you maybe lucky. If not i suppose the only other thing to do would be to cut away the plastic shroud on the back of the steering wheel so you can fit a stud extractor or some mole grips to the bolt head, alough you don't want to go down that route yet.

And just a quick reminder, if your working on any srs system i'ts very important to disconect the battery first. Just make sure you have your radio code to hand and if you have satnav it will need to be shut down properly.:D

:wss: The screws are not actually attached to the backplate but breaking it up will allow you to get to the screws and remove them with a big pair of pliars.

But -- You will have to take the whole wheel off to fit a new backplate that you will need to get from a scrapyard. :(
