auto trans and PS fluid (without breaking the bank!)

Amongst other things, have recently changed auto transmission fluid, as advised on Forum links,ie. the correct way. Plus due to most recent job had to refill and bleed PS system.
The advised fluids given in Manufacturers specs are Texaco N402 for trans, and Dexron 111 type fluid PS unit.
In order to do both tasks I required a minimum of 10 litres.

The cost being quoted by some retailers for 5 litres was mind blowing, in some cases £45/£56

After some searching I discovered this company Rock Oil, which not only detail the recommended Texaco N402 in their specs as you can see, but only cost £56 for 10 Litres.

ATF Premium MV LT71141 Fully Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid Oil 5 litres! £28.99 (Ebay listing number 252457587931)
Rock Oil ATF DIII-MV - Fully-Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

Introducing the Rock Oil ATF d3-MV which is a fully synthetic, multi-vehicle ATF designed to meet the exact specifications and performance standards required by Land Rover due to the more severe requirements of their automatic transmissions.

ATF DIII-MV is a fully-synthetic, multi-vehicle ATF designed to meet the requirements of a wide range of European, Asian and American vehicles and specifications. ATF DIII-MV also meets the stringent JASO-1A performance standard created by Japanese Automobile Manufacturers due to the more severe requirements of their automatic transmissions.

ATF DIII-MV is suitable for use where the following are recommended:

Manufacturer Specification / Product
Jaguar Shell M1375.4
Land Rover Texaco N402, Shell M1375.4

NB:Rock Oil place their contact number on the can, which is answered by a young lady called Heather, what she doesn't know about synthetic etc oils is not worth knowing!
Any way, thought I would thread it, just in case some members were in the price trap. If there is a cheaper way than mine, would love to hear it...do not mind saving cash!:D

Yes, thanks Derek, we've recently been alerted to that one and so it's on my list here.

We are assured by the manufacturer of Carlube ATF-U that it does meet the N402 specification for our automatic gearboxes, even though some literature/packaging doesn't state that (see my list).

Just to confirm that Dexron III should only be used in the PAS system, not the automatic gearbox.

Hi Simon,,,no intention of stepping on toes. In fact glad to see you "picked" up same questionable spec, equally glad to see it fitted 75 use.
I'm aware you also spoke with Rock Oil. From my point of view it was a relief to see a company actually mentioning the manufactures spec of Texaco N402,which along with the confirmation from Rock Oil regarding Dexron 111,fitted in with all specs required for a very reasonable price. Totally agree with your emphatic statement regarding Dexron 111..

From Rimmers the genuine Rover branded stuff is about £45 for a 5 litre bottle but is much cheaper if you buy 2, £69.30 inc VAT for 10 litres (plus carriage).

I know its more expensive than substitutes but you won't be buying it often.

Just a Thought

I seem to remember some time ago somebody ran a car engine with no oil whatsoever and it ran for some considerable time.

Now my thought is !

What would actually happen to our 75 Jatco box if it were run with oil which was not up to spec, I mean a regular auto transmission fluid.

After all it is only oil !

Anybody up to the challenge. :getmecoat:

This fluid is now obtainable from Southern Lubricants on 0845 500 5767 and is made in the UK!

Update
I phoned Southern Lubricants but they were worried about my geographical distance from their Devon base. So I phoned Rock Oil for a nearer retailer and was promised an answer in a few hours. I'm still waiting.

So forget Rock Oil. I get the impression they're interested only in bulk orders.
