Fuel tank strap change - easy method?

I've got a stainless steel fuel tank strap to replace the horrible MGR one. It'll obviously be easier to swap them over when there's no subframe on the car (that's being changed too). Question is: how to support the tank without dropping it and tearing all the pipes etc off. Has anyone come up with a nifty method of doing it without an assistant?

TIA. :}

PS. There's about 2.5 gallons of fuel in the tank, so that's a weight of 25lbs or so, plus say 15lbs for the tank = 40lbs. I don't want to drain the tank if I can avoid it.

I just put two axel stands under the tank, about 1/2 inch below it, then just removed the tank straps. As you loosen them off, the tank will rest on the stands.

then, just did it in reverse whilst fitting. worked well

You will need to drop the exhaust and heat shield first

You could cut the tunnel part off thereby not needing to drop the exhaust, and fit a straight bar across the 2 tank straps.:cool:

Any chance you can tell me were you got your stainless steel one from please.

Just leave the tank resting on the exhaust, dead easy to swap over even with the subframe in place.

That must leave the crossbar of the H trapped between the axle stands. So I'll have to lift the tank slightly off one stand, slide the crossbar over it, then lower the tank onto the stand again.

You mean cut the crossbar off the H, then bolt it back on again?

I got it on eBay in 2016. Here's the seller's page (no items listed at present) - https://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayI...rchInterval=30. It's much heavier duty than the MGR one (3mm steel iirc).

The exhaust will already be lowered to get the subframe off though.

I dont think I did need to raise it - the stand were to one side of the bracket.

It wasn't a problem

Ok, glad to hear it. I must have the layout wrong in my mind.

My nice new stainless steel strap is now on the car. :}

In the end I used two trolley jacks to support the fuel tank - very easy. The tricky bit was getting the two forward bolts out and back in again. I had to use a mirror just to be able to see them! (car is on sleepers and I haven't lifted it high enough to get under the floor pan very easily).

Anyway, ta for the help chaps.
